I have been reading about additives for the ol' 7.3 Ford. According to the diesel sites here are a few decent ones;
opti lube xpd
stanadyne performance
diesel kleen.

Everything has been going well with the truck so far with plugging it in, 10w-30 amsoil, no trouble starting. I have been reading some of these additives help in mpg, etc.

Anyone got any experience with these?

Thanks,
Shawn

The only thing I've noticed is quieter injectors and a smoother idle when using any additive. My mileage has never changed. I've used both Stanadyne and DieselKleen.

I've used the Stanadyne as well as Ford's own additive. Using regular #2 it is a little quieter with the additives, but I usually run B20 so I don't use the additives often. The perceived performance of the Stanadyne and Ford's additive were about the same.

I've never had a problem either with fuel gelling, even without additives.

1 quart of marvel mystery oil per 35-40 gallons, worked in my 6.0 ford when i had it.

And it had what results? Saying what you added means nothing if you can't give some feedback on how it performed.

I have switched to Schaffers. I used Stanadyne for the first 60k on my truck. I liked it, but it was getting expensive. I switched to FPPF Fuel Power then saw an independent test that showed it made lubricity worse, but Schaffers faired well. I have only run a couple tanks of it, but it doresn't hurt anything and no gelling in -19 F weather. It's cheap insurance on those trucks not designed to run on the ULSD junk.

Here's a study some of us participated in over on the Gm site. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=177728

It *only* addresses the aspect of lubricity because the new ULSD loses a lot during the process of removing the sulfer.

The guy Spicer that wrote that crusade is a quack. I just wrote this in response to another one of his biased flawed studys and will just paste it:

Arlen) SPICER wrote,
?Now that I am not doing the tests and my objectivity is not necessary, let me explain my motivation. The reason I started this crusade was that I was seeing people spend a lot of money on aftermarket filters based on the word of a salesperson or based on the misleading, incomplete or outright deceiving information printed on boxes and in sales literature. Gentlemen and Ladies, Marketing and the lure of profit is VERY POWERFUL! "

This is the guy who wrote the unbiased independent study on air filters. If you read the test you can see from the start that he was out to get the aftermarket. He tested the filters in a way that made the ones he liked shine and in the worst posible way for a K&N.
He came up with a new study on additives that basically said aside from biodiesel the ony additive worth a darn was this new to the market crap that nobody heard of. The funny thing was all the dang excuses he gave for not testing other more common addatives. He wanted to stick with the most common ones and then the winner turned out to be one Nobody ever heard of. Con Artist. But back to K&N filters they are use and loved the world over. Ever been to any kind of motor sports event and not seen them???

Hate to feed a hijack, but ever been to a motorsports event where longetivity is the main goal?

Fine dust in the intake tube between my K&N filter and the turbo was enough proof for me that it wasn't the right filter for the application.

I've used Power Service's Diesel Fuel Supp. in my work truck for about a year now. This is the same company that makes Diesel Kleen. It has an additive in it that restores the lubricity of the sulfur that has been taken out in the ULSD. I've noticed a 1-2 mpg increase, less noise, and alot less smoke during start up. This is in a 25 foot cab over box truck, not really a tow rig, but if I wanted to convert it to one, I would also have shop and living areas. :)
