i'v herd of this being done, but i dont think its worth the time and money. the d-50 stuff (gears, lockers, etc.) is harder to come by, and more expensive. i would say if you are going threw all that trouble why not get a 60? thear much more common then a 50 and much stronger as well. even a ball joint 60 surpasses any 50 i'v ever seen.

good info, but a hell of alot of work, not exactly the same, but don't know if any of these will just bolt on?? i wish they would, i'd do it in a second

just save up for an EMS, or Dynatrac kit, just google them and they'll come up

i'll probably just replace the bearing for now i guess.
i'm thinking the D-60 conversion and the dynatrac kit are about the same money.
don't really need a 60 on this truck. it's just a daily driver with stock tires.
dynatrac kit is about $1800. yeouch!

I have heard that you can use the big TTB hubs (D50) though, you dont have to pillage a good D60. They should be somewhat easier to find.

They will fit. They will aslo fit the 94-02 Dodge D60 front. I have a post on Pirate4x4 and there some answers in it.

One thing I don't see addressed is the change in lug pattern. The '99 and up SD are 8 on 170mm while everything else is 8 on 6.5".

Kyle, your friend called me about the axles. Thanks for giving him my info.

I also told him a bit about the TTB thing, so you might wanna tell him more about it.

well looks like i'll have to do something now.
the freakin thing let go on me last night about 30 miles from home out on hwy 24 by Peyton.
i knew it was going to happen some time. it was making a slight rubbing sound while i turned left when it was putting a side load on the bearing.
$1800 for a conversion kit ain't happening. i guess it will just be a new bearing for now.

damn i wish i would have kept my old 97 F-350 with a good old HP dana 60.

How many miles are you guys getting out of unit bearings? I have had very godd luck with them (2 rigs both over 100,000). Never had to replace one. Other than having lockout hubs I don't see the advantage to the conversion. Even serviceable bearings wear out sooner or later.

well one advantage is i could have taken the hubs apart and repack and inspect the bearings like i have on every other new truck i've bought.
since i couldn't i got to pay a tow truck to drag me 50 miles home from out on Hwy 24 in the middle of the night.
i think servicability is pretty important to a lot of truck owners.
mine went at 92K.

.......... it was making a slight rubbing sound while i turned left when it was putting a side load on the bearing .........

Mine was doing the exact same thing this past summer. Took it apart and on the outer edge of the unit bearing is a small roller bearing, that was rusted. Popped the little bearing out and took it to a 'bearing only' place where they matched it up for < $10. Twelve pack of Bud later for a shop to press the little baring back in the unit bearing & I then put it all back together and has been fine so far.

With the big axle sleeve/gasket, inner gasket, bearing, incidentals, total was < $100. Lots better than getting a new unit bearing from Drive Train for $350 as I still would have had most the other costs anyway.

i'm not sure if the ones on my truck were the origional but they went out at around 265,000.
my reasoning for doing the swap is also servicability, and being able to disconect my hubs in the event i get a locker or weld up my front axle.

you can also make these unit bearings greaseable, there are lots of write ups on the diesel forums on how people are doing that, but the total servicablity and lack of parts turning is what i'm after, but i just had to replace one as well, and that hurt my coin, bad:mad:
