So I just went through my first set of tires on my XR650R. I have looked around town and the prices seem a bit high. I am on a pretty tight budget right now and was looking at the online options. Are there any better choices than others out there. ohh yeah I am looking at the dunlop D606. It looks like a good tire for street and off road use.

dunlops dont last. Try an IRC VE33 rear from Rocky Mountain MC (google it) online. Great cheap tire that will outlast any dunlop.

Does it need to be DOT approved?

I'm no expert on dual sport tires, and I buy my tires for traction, not to last ... but you know who might help you, are the guys over at www.advrider.com.

Thanks Yeah It kinda needs to be DOT because i do ride on the street, I do most of my riding off road, so I have a set of nice off road tires on there but I really don't want to go out and get a ticket for not having DOT treads.

:D i run mine on/off street, go with the ircve33 they longer than a couple other brands i have run on my xr650. i don't worry about dot crap, as long as you don't do any thing dump the boys in blue leave you alone. And if you do get stopped a few other guys will so up and talk about how cool your bike is, and how they wish thier wifes would let them have one. don't ask how i know this.:D :D

I would really like to get an extra set of rims with some nice street tires on them but I really don't do enough street riding to justify it.

ITs been a while since i ran a dual sport, but even when i did i never ran DOT tires and never had a problem with it. If a cop wants to go as far as giving you a ticket for using non DOT tires, youve probably got much bigger problems. Maxxis, IMO, is one of the best tire manufactures out there as far as the dirt scene goes. Their tires are relatively inexpensive, last a good amount of time and have excellent traction. I ran their IT tires on every dirtbike ive ever owned and have been pleased with them. They hook up in just about anything and last a long time. I used them on a WR 400 i had several years ago for trail riding with a little street in between and they did well.

You might want to take a look at their Dualmaxx series tires...alot of the enduro guys i know swear by them, especially if your after a DOT tire.
