Holy cow, Ford is replacing the problematic CPS. I wonder if they fixed the CPS itself or if this is a programming change to make the truck not die with a bad CPS.

Interesting. I know the price of a replacement CPS has dropped SIGNIFICANTLY lately. I'm curious as to what the fix is as well, anybody talk to Ford about it yet? If they're just slapping another of the same CPS in there I'd rather not go through the hassle of taking it to a dealer.

It's an updated CPS. They are inspecting for a black (whatever that means) CPS and replacing them with an updated, grey version.
I don't think there's anyway to reprogram to run without it as it senses cam position to time injector firing. There's really no way to determine cam position since it varies with RPMs.
I went to International CPS's a long time ago and haven't had a failure since.
Go here for Ford's recall information on this one: http://www.ford.com/owner-services/customer-support/recall-information

So...wouldn't they know where the cam is if they know what the RPMs are? I'm not being a smartass; I honestly don't know.

I had a CPS failure and replaced it with whatever NAPA sells. No failures since. I have also heard tales on the major powerstroke forums from folks who have had the factory CPS for 200k+ with no problems. I don't think it matters where we buy 'em, just whether or not we get lucky. If they have an updated version with a greatly reduced chance of failure, I'll definitely grab one for the glovebox.

I've not had a problem with my CPS, but I do keep one in the center console. So, can we just take the truck to a Ford dealer for install? I'll be happy to cash in on my free CPS, for peace of mind, even though they are 15 bucks now.

From the article:
Customers who believe their vehicles may be affected should call the company at 866-436-7332 or contact a local Ford dealer, the company said.
I'd give 'em a call first.

The CPS is what tells the CPU and your tach what the RPMs are also.

i am a ford tech, they are replacing the old style crank sensor with the updated ones. when they are refering to black, they are refering to the color. and if you still have the old style take your truck in and they will replace it.

What if I've got a black one in my glovebox as a spare, and an international one in the truck? I'd like to have a reliable spare.

the black one will be reliable. if it is new. i wouldn't sweat it. and if you have never replaced the one in your truck, you will have a black one. they hadn't started selling the grey ones through ford for less than a year now.
