View Full Version : Title for a dirt bike??

I'm thinking of buying a dirt bike and I'm wondering if I can/should get a title from the seller. I'd buy it used, not from a dealer and wouldn't want to make it street legal. My concern is that the bike might still have a loan on it. I wouldn't want to buy without getting a title and have a lender come out of the woodwork to try and repo my/their bike.
TIA.

My lender will bring in a title with a few day notice. I WOULD NOT walk away from a deal with out a title and bill of sale in hand.

Well, I'm not sure a Bill of Sale would do much. My concern would be if there's a loan and I wasn't told about it by the seller.
Do dirt bikes not registered for street use normally have titles?

No titles in the state of CO, unless for street use.

Not always true. I have a title for my WR400, which is not licensed and has never been street legal.

I had a YZ125 in high school (in another state). I bought it from the original owner and he gave me a title with it.

I think with the newer models there are titles for them. I had an old honda quad that we bought from the orginal owner and no title with it. Sold it with a bill of sale.

My 2003 KX250 had no title when purchased new. If you no going to register it for the street a bill of sale is good enough. His bank can't come get the bike from you if he defaults if you have a bill of sale.

all you need is a bill of sale. I have bought many new bikes and quads and have not revieved a so called title from a dealer. you get all the paper work but a title. my kx250f, blaster, crf50 and my yzf450 did not have a title and I bought all of them new from the dealers. when I bought my first race quad use from a private seller it had one, only becouse he had it titled in the state of wyoming. I have sold many bikes over the years and been around motoross for 8-9 years and have never heard of a title on off road bike

we've got a WR400, KLX110 and a Kawi ATV, and none of them have titles. both the KLX and the ATV were purchased through dealers, and I was told at the time of purchase that they do not have titles for them since they are not street legal, if you want them to become street legal and get them registered then you'd have to apply for one or something. i didn't take too much info in, since the KLX and ATV will never be street legal, double checked with the bank (at the time i had a small loan on the ATV) about the title issue and they said that for off road vehicles they normally do not have titles and when i decide to sell then i just have to write up a bill of sale.

in Colorado when there is a loan on a vehicle sold as for off road use only the lender keeps the MSO or certificate of origin, providing it is new. On used vehicles sold as for off road use only the loan is set up like a credit card. I have a loan on my xr650r and when I went to get plates and a title for it I asked the lending company If they want the title for the bike and they said no. leading me to believe that if i where to default on the loan and did not have the bike they would probably get calateral out of me in one way or another, and not necessarily go after the bike. but then again I am no expert.

Used. The seller had a CO title he signed over to me. They looked at me funny at the DMV when I went in to change it to my name and I told them I didn't want plates or registration, just the title in my name. I now have a CO title in my name for a dirt bike that's never been street legal or plated. :)

my quad was used, but the KLX was brand spankin new and was paid outright and still didn't get a title. Grandpa bought it for my son for his birthday, so when he gave me all the paperwork, i looked through it all and didn't see a title, so i called the dealership and asked, thinking that it would be mailed out later, and they told me that they don't have titles for off road bikes. which got me thinking, thats kinda fooked, what if they get stolen?! so i called my bank, whom i had a loan out on the used atv, and asked them if they have a title on file for the atv as collateral and they said no, that there normally aren't titles for those type of vehicles.

x2. Bought my XR250R used, with no title. I registered it for street use (though it wasn't street legal), just so i didn't have issues when crossing over streets between trails. They gave me a title for it, which i gave the buyer when I sold it.

Unless You Can Get The Mso You Will Not Get A Title In Colorado You Also Have To Fill Out A Simple Form That You Made The Unit Street Legal, Head And Tailight/brakelight, Rear View Mirror, Horn And Dot Legal Tires, I Always Go Through This Process To Get The Title To Have A Saleable Unit When It's Time To Sell.(i Worked In A Dealership And Have Done A 100+ Of These!)

So I bought an old Yamaha dirtbike that COULD be street legal (all the parts are there). I intended to only use it offroad. There was no title with it. Is it possible to get a title then for this bike so I can register it and use it on-road?
