I don't know about the 360's but my son informed me the other day that the 1st PS3's are and the newer ones are not. go figure and if my son speaks the truth. When it comes to games, most the time he does.

Partially true...
The 40GB PS is NOT backwards compatible. The 80GB one is however, but only through software that you have to almost continually update as its not a hardware thing like the older model PS3's.
The 360 is compatible with most Xbox games...its kinda rare youll find one its not compatible with.
But if your question was are 360 compatible with PS3 games, or vice versa, then the answer is no.

I know they aren't cross compatible, but the backwards part is what concerned me. We have a bunch of PS2 and Xbox games. With pricing the way it is, looks like the 360 is the way to go (damn Microsoft for getting something right).

I dunno if I can say they got it right, exactly... mine crashes now and then. No blue screen, just locks up :D

I just talked to a guy at the local game shop that sounded like he knew what was up with the PS3 systems. All are backwards compatible but the 40gb and 80gb you have to download an emulator. The 60gb system is 95% compatible right out of the box. Decided to just pick up a used PS2 for $60.

Yep, PS2's are cheap enough that if i wanted to play PS2 games, id just get one...i seem them on craigslist and other places all the time for around 50 bucks. I got the 40GB model yesterday and it is indeed not compatible with PS2 games...however, i have heard that through a little modification(software only) that it can be made to work.
