WASHINGTON - President Bush on Wednesday accused Congress of dragging its feet on key pieces of legislation, urging quick action on budget and children's health measures.

He also urged the Democratic-controlled Congress to drop efforts to pass a House resolution labeling as genocide the World War I-era killing of up to 1.5 million Armenians in the final years of the Ottoman Empire.

With all the pressing responsibilities facing the nation, "One thing Congress should not be doing is sorting out the historical record of the Ottoman Empire," he said.

"Congress has little to show for all the time that has gone by" since Democrats gained control in January of both the House and the Senate, Bush said.

I think this deal relates to the Iraq war. If we piss off Turkey enough to close our airbase that is a major supply chain for Iraq, well.......it makes the war effort harder for Bush to execute, which runs up costs, which runs up anger amongst "us" unwashed masses, which may someday become loud enough that our wishes will be heard inside the soundproof walls of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

So instead of going toe-to-toe, we go around and try to pass "passive aggressive" legislation? It still wouldn't stop anything. I find it a bit hypocritical to start pointing fingers at this point in our history.

I agree, but it's the only reason I could think of as to why it's being done. Nothing is getting through the front door, so, just a total guess, on my part.

It seems so ridiculously esoteric, that there has to be some sort of hidden agenda, one would think.

I mean- where in the heck did they come up with the Ottoman Empire? Jesus, I think we spent like an hour on that in all of my schooling combined.......

this legislation has been out there for something to the tune of 50 years. nancy pelosi just wants to push it through now so turkey gets pissed at us, shuts down our airbase and then the iraq war couldnt be sustained any longer. yea theres a good idea....lets stop a war by making it harder for our troops to get supplies, reinforcements, air support, etc. brilliant.

The problem is when you divert attention from the real issue onto something which is obviously not our concern you lose credibility in your arguement. In fact, to be passive aggressive like this diminishes a number of different things.

I don't know. I don't know if it's passive-agressive, or simply exhausting every possible option to end the occupation of Iraq.

I wish the Oval Office would listen to what the people want, I really do. But they've got nothing to lose- there is no re-election coming for GW, so he doesn't give a rat's ass about serving his people.

So, in order to get to the desired ends (ending the war, and bringing our troops home), maybe this is a ploy that will work.

Either way, it's friggin' bizarre.............

Why anyone would ever want to be in politics is beyond me. I mean, you've got Romney out there dropping tons of his own dough, just to get involved in this BS? And I thought I've done some crazy chit. Holy cow, that dude is NUTS.

Turkey would not play when we executed teh war in 03, and we did just fine. We can do this without them too.

Still a useless piece of legislation, adn once again shows the ignorance of our congress, and especially that of the more radical dems.

I have proposed this in the past. I even have a complete plan from who run to how to finance the campaingns and keep it a fair race.

Funny political cartoon in the Rocky- it showed congress as the hunter, then there was a guy in a bunker labeled as Iraq war, there was a turkey hanging from a string off the limb of a tree labeled "Turkey", and the congress hunter taking aim at the Turkey, implying if the shot was accurate, it would fall on the head of the Iraq war.........

Just thought it was kinda funny.

I'm just going to put in my .02 - regardless of party connections, our Congress always manages to waste time and resources on irrelevant issues to the country. The big change I would like to see is the budget be approved prior to the new fiscal year so we are not always in continuing resolution - and if there is no budget approved, then Congress should not be able to take a recess until it is approved. Oh, and the people should be the ones to say whether or not Congress gets a raise, instead of Congress getting to vote themselves a raise...sorry, off topic, just needed to rant :D

I'm with you on this. The ignorance and ineffectiveness of our congress is embarassing at best. Radical Dems are just as bad as radical anything.

I would agree that the only push for the "Genocide" statement was to turn Turkey away from the US. And therefore make it harder for us to fight in Iraq.

As for the Childrens Health Care, I am glad they got whomped. The original legislation was for low income kids only. What they tried to pass was health insurance for middle class families. Nothing near what the original legislation was. And Bush made sure that everyone knew why he was going to veto it.

I wish the Oval Office would listen to what the people want, I really do. But they've got nothing to lose- there is no re-election coming for GW, so he doesn't give a rat's ass about serving his people.

Where do you get that? Who is this "we" you are talking about? And on what issues? I am still in favor of the Iraq war, I just wish we could fight it the way we need to. So in I wish congress would listen to what the people really want and allow us to kick ass and check the collateral damage after. I mean come on, they have a democratic controlled senate and congress and they still can't end the war. Because of the splits in thier own party...

ya, real smart. And people are astounded when we ask what side the Dems are on.

Makes a whole lot of sense to make a war harder and more expensive to fight which leads to longer time in combat which leads to more deaths.

Bravo Pellosi, well done.

Snotty, c'mon man. Given the current situation that and to continue to use the military tool in a fashion that would change things would mean doing to them what was done to Dresden. It is difficult to imagine that their people deserve that. It's a friggin chaotic civil war with more than just two sides fighting. It's like a black hole that just keeps sucking us in as we get nearer to it. We can barely rebuild what already has been destroyed because the area isn't safe enough. Building to Building fighting with 3-4 different groups trying to kill you and eachother. This is why not having a clear enemy makes things so difficult for the more classical style of war. They made bombs so soldiers wouldn't have to invade cities if I'm not mistaken. So if you go to war, you are going to need to use big bombs and flatten cities, if you're not prepared to do that then don't use the conventional military tool. Back one side to over throw the other and let them kill eachother. People who are from there are going to able perhaps to distinguish the enemy, know the terrain and borders easier than us.

I lost a lot of respect (not that there was much) for the Dems over this piece of legislation. Because of what they were trying to do with it. Friggin wussies should take it head on with the right words and ideas. It shows me that they'll create more foreign policy blunders on top of what has already been done to back door people. That style of politics is offensive to me. It's why congress can't be trusted. Ass Ass Assnine behavior constantly.
