I just got a truck 2 days ago.
I am trading that now for another.
The truck I have now does not drive and will not pass emissions.
How do I get the title into my name, and then into the new owners name?
I have the bill of sell and the signed title from the original owner.
Looking at Colorado's DMV website, it said I need it to pass emissions before I can transfer the title? Did I read that wrong? Or is there a way around this?
I can go up there and do it tomorrow, but, I need to know what I need to bring with me to get it done.
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

if you have not put the title in your name yet, you can cut yourself out of the loop and just hand that title over to the person you sell it to and they can take care of it.

The orginal owner and myself signed it the day before yesterday. There isn't another spot n the back of the title to add the new owners name to it. Did I screw up?

plus, i think that has to pass emissions thing is for the seller you bought it from. it needed to pass emissions before they sold it to you. and i think you can get it titled, just not licensed until it passes emissions.

there's no way it's going to pass emissions.
No cats on it and I can't drive it faster then 35mph. bad death wobble.
Is there no way around this?
What about just handing him the title, and a Bill of sell from the original owner and a bill of sell from me to him?
Then, just let him deal with it later?

hmmm, then i would try this. go to dmv and transfer title to you. tell them vehicle is non operational at this time and need titled for insurance to cover the vehicle while its rebuilt/repaired. then you got tired of the project taking up too much of your time and you sold it before it was finished.

Insurance didn't require proof of Title. I got the insurance on it already yesterday.

laramie county as in wyoming? hmm, may be easier. 1 you will need a vin inspection. the law can do that. they need to confirm the vin is right. then you take the vin inspection and the wyo title to your dmv and transfer it to colo title, then sell to your buyer.
did you have the sellers sig notarized? thats a wyoming thing not colorado

ya, sorry, right. Heh.
Okay, so what's the best approach when I go into DMV tomorrow? (and, I'm not sure it will pass inspection. I think the engine in there is not the stock one. V-6 i think was stock. v-8 is in there.

Go to the DMV and get it titled in your name. Not licensed, just titled. Then sell to the buyer. If you hadn't signed as the buyer you wouldn't need to do this, but since you did...

sounds like a mess. i think you can get away with transfer of title without getting plates, hence bypassing the emissions altogether. then sell it as you planned. hopefully someone else chimes in. i haven't dealt with Colorado titles in a couple years.

Okay, gotcha, so I have nothing to worry about then.
Steve, any idea on the cost of that? I need to make sure I have enough for that.

Depends mainly on what your title says you paid for it since you're gonna be charged sales tax. Call the DMV office and they will give you a real good estimate of what it'll cost.

heh, cool.
Okay, guess I'll head up their first thing in the morning.
Next question, do they print me a title on the spot? Or do I have to wait several weeks for snail mail?

plus, i think that has to pass emissions thing is for the seller you bought it from. it needed to pass emissions before they sold it to you. and i think you can get it titled, just not licensed until it passes emissions. He's right about getting it titled....You can transfer title without emissions, just can't get tags if your area requires emissions testing.
So, you could get the title transfered into your name, and then sell it to the new buyer and he/she can apply for a title into their name. In most cases, the 1st title transfer will lead to a printing of title at that visit, but the new owners may likely have to have their new title mailed to them since a new title had been issued X days prior. No big deal though.
As far as relinquishing you from emissions responsibilities when selling....Gotta tip a few years back that I now employ ---- If I sell a vehicle that may not pass emissions, I disclose that to the buyer and spell out distinctly in the BOS that the vehicle is being sold "as is for parts" --- The buyer gets a copy of the BOS, but I also retain a signed copy.
Hopefully, the person from whom you purchased didn't sweep anything under the rug and I'm guessing you wouldn't either. Anyone can choose to buy a vehicle that won't pass emissions if the price is right...It is simply about disclosure.
EDIT: Sorry I got interrupted and some other replies filitered in during typing :D

They will print you one on the spot, UNLESS a title has been printed for it within the past 30 days, then it gets mailed to you. Found out that one the hard way.
And has been said you don't need emissions to get a title, only to get plates.

I know I got took on the deal, but I've explained EVERYTHING to the new owner what I've discovered and He's willing to fix the problems.
Good idea on the BOS. I'll make sure I put that in there, "sold as is for parts".
Thanks guys. :)

I've sold a couple that won't pass emissions, but my wording is "Seller expresses to buyer that subject vehicle will not pass emissions as sold. Buyer assumes all responsibility for ensuring that vehicle will meet emissions standards if buyer intends to license said vehicle in an emissions required area".

Ya, that sounds good CSP.
I just got back from DMV. New title in my hand.
Total cost with a 60 day temp permit, $17.22
It was easier then I thought. :)

passed emissions! Ya!
Question, how long do I have between getting the emissions (the passed vehicle inspection report for emissions) and the licensing of the vehicle? My temp tag is still good till Dec. 18th.
I just don't want the report to expire and have to do it again. I've been very busy and can't get off work to take care of it right now.
BTW, I did the inspection on the 23rd of Oct. So time has already gone by abit.
On another note, The Driver's side frame seems to be pushed back about 3/4" in the front. Can anyone reccomend a good but fairly inexpensive shop that can straighten that for me? I can't get the bumper/valance on correctly. :(
Thanks
