I went up Twin Cone today. I was going to have a friend drive up in his truck also, but he wanted to get his new frame painted before the cold weather hits, so I went alone. It was a bit strange being the only one on the trail. There were some tire tracks, but I don't think they were from today as I had to move a small tree that had fallen across the road. It seems a little rougher as it looked like a bit of rain had fallen over the summer and washed dirt from between the rocks, exposing them more. I didn't have any problems going up except the wind was really howling and I kept getting dust in my eyes. As soon as I started down, I found that my tranny no longer liked 2nd gear as it would immediately pop out at first, then wouldn't go in at all. So I had to drive down in 1st, 1st overdrive and 3rd. It did fine on the highway, but I still had to go 1st straight to 3rd.

Repaired section. It was graded all the way to the 2nd gate though not very heavily.

The aspens were mostly bare, but some bushes still had color.

Beyond the 2nd gate it was Twin Cone as usual.

The only aspens with leaves were below the cliff side camp site.

The start of the rougher part.

Me posing near the top. The wind was so strong that I could hardly open the door to get out.

Nice! I deleted my thread since you ran it. You should post one in Trail Talk too. What time did you go out the lower gate? I am wondering if it got left open twice.

I got there after dark and 2 of the cabins had lights on. Maybe they are leaving the gate open?

Far out. I wonder if the weather will hold - maybe hit it next weekend?
Thanks for keeping us up to date on this Jimfoo

Ahh the big mud hole is gone huh? A good rain will bring it back I'll bet or the spring melt. Looks like a bunch of dirt was brought in, but no rocks to hold it in place??

That's a cool trail, with some awesome views. And cold just about any time of the year! Glad you have no major issues going solo. Did you find anything out about the tranny?

If you go and enjoy the trail, please call the US Forestry Service, South Platte District and tell them what a great place it is to wheel! They went the extra mile to get it back open. And yes, even with the aspen color gone, it has some of the most spectacular views IMO.

The road was repaired by the Park County Road & Bridge Department in Fairplay... and thank you - we appreciate your comment
