1 Dead, 1 Missing After Rock Slab Hits Boat
Boat, Car Registered To Colorado Owner

POSTED: 6:35 am MDT October 2, 2007

DENVER -- One person was killed and another is still missing after a giant rock slab fell from a sandstone arch on Lake Powell, Utah, crushing a boat registered in Colorado.

The names of the victims have not been released, but a car with Colorado license plates was found at the marina where the boat was put in the water last week.

The accident happened Friday, but news of the Colorado connection didn't come out until late Monday.

The National Park Service said the rock slab, about 250 square feet in size, fell onto the bow of the boat, capsizing it.

Rangers recovered the body of a woman about five miles down river from Halls Crossing and Bullfrog, but a man was still missing and presumed drowned.

Divers were called to the site, where water depths are around 150 feet, to find the second victim. But underwater trees were impeding the search, Marianne Karraker, spokeswoman for Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, told the Salt Lake Tribune.

It was unclear how much longer the search for the second victim would continue.

"We don't like leaving people down there," Karraker told the Tribune.

The names of the victims are not being released pending notification of family members, the National Park Service said.
