Too tired to be original here...just copying and pasting my post from the other thread. I heading to bed to die.
I just got home from that game. Oh my fawking GAWD that was as intense as I've ever seen!!! My voice is...well...I have no more voice. If I try to utter any words the raspiness in my throat just lets out a squeak. And I've got a freaking SPLITTING HEADACHE!!! I've been screaming my lungs out for several hours now and it's taken its toll.
Right after the Padres took the lead in the top of the 13th, you could have heard a pin drop but once the rally started in the bottom of the 13th the place went freaking NUTS (me included)! And when Holliday was called safe at home to win the game the whole park erupted like Krakatoa!
I've gotta say, best damn ball game I've ever been to by a long shot.
GO ROCKIES!!!

I was at the game and all I can say is that ball went over the wall hit a wheel chair and came back in. I guess it made for a unbelievable game. I thought for sure we were done in the top of the 13th. I told the guy sitting next to me "at least were in the top of our line up". I am with you Capncrunch I can't talk to well this morning because of the constant screaming. I can't remember when the last time I jumped up and down in pure joy like I did in the bottom of the 13th. What a game!!!!!! Not missing a game in the last month I need the one day off before this starts again:D

Sorry guys. I think the Phillies are just too good for them. However, knowing the history of the Phillies like I do, they'll choke like the Mets if given half the chance.

Here I am, a time zone east of Denver, with a project I had to get up at 5 am to be at this morning. So, I stay up last night and finally get pissed after the top of the 13th because the Padres scored two and for the few innings before that the Rockies batters looked like there were in little league. I turn the TV off in disgust to get a few hours sleep before getting up.
I turn on ESPN to find out for sure, and damn, they came back. And I MISSED IT.

The catcher is not allowed to block the plate when he doesn't have the ball. There is no controversy in the call at the plate. Once blue saw the ball pop out and the fact that the catcher was blocking the plate he can award home to the runner. He didn't call it that way, however - he just waved Holliday safe. But he could have and maybe should have awarded him the plate by rule anway.
I guess Matt was calculating that he could sneak in on the right side of the plate with a ballz-out head-first slide. He couldn't know catch would get there in time. But I bet next time he'll just go cleats-first and/or knock the catcher into next Tuesday. :D
MVP for Holliday and Rookie of The Year for Tulo or there's no justice!

Please. Fielder/Braun.
Actually, ROY is occasionally a curse, so I care less about that.
Edit: Yesterday is really going to slant the voting, though. :)
3 weeks ago, I'd have said Rollins was a distant 3rd to those 2 guys.
Based on how voters pick, he could actually win it this month if he keeps up.
All three are great for the game, so its actually win-win-win. :)

Nah he's only got a .288 BA. Ryan Howard would take MVP before Fielder I think. Homeruns are nice, but they alone don't get you MVP.
Holliday won the batting title and the ribbie title and he was no slouch in homers and runs scored. The fact that he literally took one on the chin for the team and left skin on the field won't hurt his chances either. :D
ROY certainly didn't hurt Pujols, although winning and getting swept in the WS seems to have hurt the Cards and the Astros, respectively. meh. I only care about the Pirates in the NLC now and it seems clear that they are content with being a farm club for the rest of the league (which is what the Rockies have been for the last 12 yrs too).

Best game I have ever seen!
Throat is killing me, head hurts a little from screaming and post game celebration drinks. Probably the best sports moment of my life was holiday sliding in and the pause till he was called safe. Then just pandemonium! Can't even describe how happy I am................:D
This match-up with the Philles is going to be a great series. Too great hitting teams, but the way we are playing right now we are going to be tough to beat. I think the key is going to be starts from our Morales and Jimenz, probably in game 2 and 3. Going to be some great baseball.

I agree: Homeruns are nice but they don't get you MVP. But holy fawking shiat. Sit back for a second and think about how many he had. Who else has had this many and NOT been pointed at as a possible juicer? Roger Maris? (I don't think A-rod abuses, myself, but others do).
Edit: Look here. (http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/league_leaders.jsp?sortByStat=HR&baseballScope=mlb&statType=1&timeFrame=1&timeSubFrame=2007) Only 5 guys in the entire league even got to a "paltry" 40 HR and 2 of them were Howard and Dunn who ONLY swing for the fence? No one is hitting home runs. Did we remove the juice or is the pitching better?
Turning a winner out of a bunch of losers should count. Well, maybe for both. Furthermore, the guy is pitched around much the way bonds was, back in the day. He missed three games ALL YEAR (same with Holliday), and RBIs are tougher to come by when your team doesn't have the hot bats the rockies do. Despite that, he's behind only a handful (15?), his batting average is quite a bit less, but his OBP is very close. Slugging is actually HIGHER than Holliday. He has <10 less runs than holliday on some 50 fewer ABs.
I don't think anyone is seriously considering Howard this year, though. Rollins?
Concur on Pujols, but look through the list over the past 2 decades: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLB_Rookie_of_the_Year_Award
A lot of these guys are "who?" footnotes now. :(
Lastly, I think the Pirates are improving. They've got young guys. Its gonna take a few years to develop them, but they have some promise. They're where Colorado was a few years back. Give them a chance. :)

Good points! MVP, I think, should encompass how much a player brings to the team- leadership, motiviation, locker-room attitude, as well as stats.
Holliday is a very viable and deserving candidate for MVP!

I'd love to see the actual rule there. Every catcher in the leage will block the plate as the throw is coming in as long as the throw isn't pulling them off the plate. Plus he had the ball pretty much simultaneously with Holliday getting to the plate.
As far as sliding into home, when I played in HS we were always taught to slide feet first at home. A foot could have pushed Barrett's foot out of the way where Holliday's wrist just buckled when he hit it.
I'm glad the Rockies won, but IMHO that should have been an out at the plate. Also the umpire seemed hesitant as to what he was going to call. Usually when they don't make the call immediately it's because the runner missed the plate.

They can block the path when they have the ball and are in the act of making the tag. See Rules 7.01 and 7.06 on obstruction (http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/official_rules/runner_7.jsp). He didn't have the ball and the umpire - who is notoriously slow to do just about everything if you noticed - waited until the play was complete before calling anything. If the catcher had held onto the ball it would have been an out at the plate most likely. But he didn't - and, to his credit, the ump waited until the slide/tag were done before calling him safe. But the ump didn't follow the rules for calling obstruction so he must have thought Holliday touched the plate so it didn't matter anyway.
I do agree with sliding feet-first at home most of the time. The catcher is wearing a lot of pads and therefore has a big advantage in the amount of punishment he can withstand. But I disagree that Holliday's wrist buckled. Matt's hand and wrist actually dragged the catcher's cleated foot about 2 feet - from in front of the plate to behind it. But I can only guess that Holliday didn't think about it. He probably just thought he could get his hand in there before the tag. He was right about that much but paid the price with his face and hand

I was always taught that you don't slide head first into home b/c you are WAY more injury prone. I new a guy who did that same thing that Holliday did last night, but instead of moving the catchers foot with his arm, this guys shoulder shattered. Sliding head first into home is just more dangerous and thats why it's frowned on.
As for the rule on obstruction... if he called obstruction on that, that would have absolutely ruined the game. NO umpire would EVER call obstruction like that. You think it would have been good for the game if the catcher DID catch the ball and tag him out, but because he blocked the plate, we went to the playoff because of an obstruction call?

Also I hear on ESPN that a major part of the MVP vote is how much that player himself influenced the team winning...Holliday...C'MON! We couldn't have done it without him! He'll get a LOT of votes especially after throwing his face in the dirt for a win.

Are the Rockies worse off without Holliday than the Brewers without Fielder?
My personal $0.02 opinion is no....

Edit: The voters are going to pick who they like. These are sportswriters. They love a good story. Prince and his dad were a good story. They sure ain't as good a story as last night is now, though.
I think Holliday would win if it were today. If he does well, he probably will and I'm fine with that.
But for value, I would NOT give up Fielder for any player in the league. (That said, if I were the Rockies, the same would hold true for MH). :)

Again. He didn't have the ball. If he had the ball then as soon as he tags the Holliday he's out. Happens all the time. Obstruction happens when the catcher either doesn't have the ball - at that point he's just blocking the base path with his body. That's obstruction.
It's true that catchers and runners collide all the time - but it's only legal when there's a tag in play. And when that happens, it's the *runner* who wants the collision in hopes of knocking the ball loose because if not he's out.
So in short, if the catcher wants to block the base path he better have the flippin' ball.
Rhino95

He was planning on having the ball. He wasn't just sitting on the plate when the ball wasn't even close. The catcher did exactly what he should have he blocked the plate...and very well at that.
