A small forest fire is burning near the cog railway in Manitou Springs. Smoke is visible for several miles. Vehicles near the cog railway station are being towed to make room for firefighters. Manitou Springs firefighters have requested help from the Colorado Springs and El Paso County fire departments, along with an air tanker from Pueblo.

Air drops are anticipated from the US Forest Service and Ft. Carson. It's about 5 acres and growing. There are about 80 firefighters on scene.

My house is out of harms way, but if it starts to make its way over towards red mountain it could get close to my moms house.

Ever since I've gotten home my son & I have watched the helicopters drop the slurry or whatever they are using. All of almost 4 years old explaining how it works to get the fire out... it was cute. The smoke seems to be dying down a bit *crossing fingers for some RAIN*

Well I just sent you the picture in an email. I hope the picture does the drop justice because it looked like the tanker was going to fly into the tree in front of my house. As much as I dont like to see this happen....having a front row seat is kinda cool.

Neat pics! What type of fixed wing aircraft are the using for the fire retardant drop? You see the old WWII bombers with radial engines, less and less these days, maybe not at all anymore. Sad.

Pretty sure they don't use the PB4Y-2s anymore since that one broke apart in 2002. There were only 5 left at that point.

I don't think so either. Last I heard these were grounded. You also don't see the P-2V Neptunes that much anymore either. Not a WWII bird, but still a cool aircraft. C-130's are great planes, but are kinda boring compared to the older stuff.

Yeah I used to watch both shows as a kid also. I like the Jeep connection with the show, so that's why I use that Av.
Both seasons of The Rat Patrol and I believe all seasons of Combat are available on DVD. Enjoy!

Fire mitigation is all I have to say about this...
after learning about human impact on forests and the consequences, and spending the last half of the summer doing mitigation work and controlled burn prep at white ranch in jeffco, i will agree completely with this statement
