We will try once again to work on Radical Hill on Sun Sept. 23. We may have to stop traffic depending on what we have to do with the big rock. We are leaving Conifer Safeway somewhere around 8:15 - 8:30 and running Red Cone first, just to give everyone an idea of our time line.

Jimfoo,
I'm curious, what exactly will you be doing to Radical ?

Mainly trying to break or move the rock, pick up trash and maybe reduce the sidehill a little below the switchbacks on a small section. The ranger never showed last time to let us know if there was anything else he wanted, and so far I haven't gotten a hold of him.

The reason I ask (and I do so with ALL due respect) is, must that type of work be done under the direction of a forest service employee ? If not, why is removing that rock very much different than changing the existing-natural path of a trail which is strictly forbidden ?
I don't like that rock either, don't get me wrong. But it exists naturally and is a "normal" part of that trail contributing to it's evolving difficulty.
Again, I ask in all respect.

Because we don't need any people rolling up there. Should all trails be allowed to erode into impassible obstacles? I don't think so. We are keeping the trail like it has been in the past. Maybe Webster should be kept with all the washouts also? Maybe no one should maintain any trails at all. Then there will be no trails at all. If you want a harder trail, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.

Here's a novel idea. The forest service should be maintaining the trails, not us. That's what we pay them for. They might be understaffed or underpayed or indifferent, but that's their job !

They don't have the time OR money. That's why people adopt trails. Thats why some trails are open instead of closed. If you don't like people volunteering to help keep trails open then YOU are an ASSHAT EXTRAORDINAIRE and don't belong off road.:flipoff2:

Here's an example for you. The ranger said yesterday that if people didn't volunteer with the post and cable project on Left Hand/Carnage, that the two of them would never be able to get it done as he has tons of trails and other work, and that it probably would have been closed due to the abuse. Lots of greenies volunteer to try to close our trails. Why shouldn't we volunteer to keep them open?

Wow. Just wow.

Ever taken the time to think that maybe, JUST MAYBE, the outstanding efforts and work put forth by groups like this is a driving force that help keeps our trails open? If the FS can't afford to maintain or repair a road, guess what they do. They CLOSE it.

Are you the forum tuff guy ?
I tried to keep the thread civil with you and not get down to your level, but it didn't work.

I don't pay you to work on USFS trails. Who are you to "close" trails ???

roxo if you are paying the USFS to maintain the trails, you're not paying them enough. So man up and give them more money.

Maybe you are misunderstanding me. If we close Radical Hill, it would just be for a very short time for safety. Would you like to be driving up and having a 1000 lb rock roll on top of you? We will try to break it first, but if we have to drag or winch it, we don't want people trying to come up or down getting in the way.

Actually, I'd prefer you just left the rock in "OUR" forest alone...

It isn't up to me, but apparently it is up to you !
Sierra club ? Ha ! Not with 30+ years of 4x4ing and dirtbiking history and yes I have recently been up radical. Maybe we should rename the trail : "Jimfoo's memorial trail"...

You are missing the point they are doing trail MAINENANCE under the direction of the USFS to "help them out" and show our combined intrest in assisting them in keeping the roads passable and safe.

If I can get out of town on SUN I will be there to lend a hand

No, I am not the forum tough guy, I just get aggravated with people who don't seem to give a rats ass if trails get closed. If it wasn't for adopted trails, I seriously bet that Webster would be closed from washouts, Radical would be impassable from washouts, and Red Cone would be so dug up that no one could go up or down the Webster side. I see you want all the fun but none of the responsibility. Sure it would be great if the Forest Service could maintain all the trails, but they can't. If areas get too f-ed up, they get closed. It is my clubs job to maintain Radical Hill. We have a signed agreement with them. What do you have? What have you done? Probably 90+% of the people on this board either help work on trails or give to organizations that help to keep trails open.
I don't think you will find much support for your "cause". I didn't feel the need to mention it, but this work will probably end up as a Fox Signature Story, which helps put the 4x4 community in a good light in the public eye. Wileec, you are more than welcome to come help. I'm sorry you feel that trails should be left to degrade until they are no longer passable, as that is what would happen. Some arguments to close trails is that they aren't roads as they don't get regular maintainence. As they get bad, idiots drive around the hard parts, doing more damage. After a while, the area looks like crap and the greenies want it closed. I see no point in any further discussion on the subject as both of us have stated our thoughts.
