View Full Version : Late October camping/passes still open?

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I haven't been able to do any serious wheeling since Labor Day (nothing dramatic, I'm in the middle of moving.) I'll be out of the apartment on September 30, but I'll be antelope hunting in Wyoming for the first two weekends of October (6-8 and 13-14.) Hunting season ends on October 15, and I haven't yet decided whether I'll go elk hunting or not. So, once October 15 hits, I'll basically have my weekends back.

What I'm wondering is, what might still be open that late? I know the FS closes a lot of the passes with gates long before they get snowed in, so that's why I'm concerned. I noticed this morning after the clouds lifted that there was a dusting of snow on Mt Evans and it reminded me that the warm weather is coming to an end.

Does anyone know if the FS posts a list of gated roads and when they are closed? Might be a nice resource. I was thinking I might like to hit Mosquito before it gets snowed in, or maybe Tincup. A longshot possibility (would require taking some time off work) might be some of the Southern Colorado passes like Imogene, Engineer or Stony.

Check this site http://www.bushducks.com/tripreps/passopen.htm It probably depends on exactly what the weather is like. Many passes don't have gates, but I sure wouldn't like to drive up, then have to back down and try to turn around in the snow on some of them. I would think something would be open though. If not passes, there will still be other trails.
