View Full Version : How long can I expect to be miserable?

Last night I smoked my last cigarette at nine pm. It's almost eleven am, and I want to rip someone's arm off and beat them with it, then cuss a few times, then smoke ten cigarettes, then beat someone up again. I'm losing my mind. I don't want to go on the patch, because last time I tried that even the lowest dosage made me feel like barfing. The gum is just sick. So far chewing on straws and running up the stairs to prove to myself why I need to quit is holding off my cravings. Well..maybe not the cravings, but I haven't smoked yet.

AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I miss cigarettes.:(

Last go around, a month, before I could somewhat function without the psychological need to have a smoke in my mouth......

Yet I smoke now, go figure :(

I quit about 6 months ago... the only way for me to do it was cold turkey... to curb the cravings I chewed a lot of just regular sugar-free gum, hard candies & on straws. Also Twizzlers are the BOMB!

Hang in there... YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

I've just recently started having cravings again, but I think that's because of stress... so needless to say I've got gum packs everywhere!

Just think how it's going to be nice to breathe again and actually taste stuff and no stinky clothes :D

I quit on Jan 31st. My method was a little "out-there" though, lol. I was stuck in the house for a couple weeks (couldn't walk, making it to the bathroom was a PITA) with my broken leg and I don't smoke in the house, so I was forced to stop. Figured I might as well go ahead and quit. I'm not gonna lie, it wasn't easy, but it wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be. Gobstoppers were a life-saver for me. They were like $1 a box at Wal-Mart and I was going through almost a box a day for a while. Just keep at it!

Oddly (or sickly) enough, a quote from Band of Brothers comes to mind here.

Capt. Spiers:

We're all scared. You hid in that ditch because you think there's still hope. But Blithe, the only hope you have is to accept the fact that you're already dead. And the sooner you accept that, the sooner you'll be able to function as a soldier is supposed to function. Without mercy. Without compassion. Without remorse. All war depends on it...

...They just don't see how simple it is...

...You just do what you have to do.

Sorry, I don't imagine that's any help (and you're probably thinking "WTF?"), but it's what came to mind.

FAWK! I just don't wanna hear that!

I'm hungrily eye-balling any smokes I may not have smoked completely. Ya know...the ones with maybe one disgusting stale hit left on them outside in a butt-can. And it's only been what....fourteen hours? I just wish my lungs would quit burning for a smoke. I'm gonna cry......I feel like I've lost my best friend.

Go do something to get your mind off of it. The more you think about it the more it'll suck.

I guess the only question I have is is that supposed to make me want to quit, or keep smoking? Because of my fragile state, I saw it as smoking encouragement. I'm going to die anyways, why not die with a cig in my mouth?

No no no....evil thoughts be gone!! Be gone!

I just might end up requiring an exorcist over this whole thing.

I will weave anything if it means I won't want a cigarette.

I thought the ladies of the board would appreciate that.;) :D

I quit drinking back in July, the 9th to be exact. Don't really have a desire to quit smoking yet.

Hell you gotta have one vice @ least. The walking away from the smokes & chew has never been a mind boggling thing. Quitting the bottle entirely is another story.

I stopped the booze a little over a year ago. No desire to quit smoking, tho.

Have you tried contacting the Colorado quitline? Support helps, when trying to kick any addictive habit.

It sure can't hurt! These guys are experts- tap thier knowledge.

Yeah! I'm right at 20 times per day as well.

I can't be vice-free, that's for sure........ I need to maintain at least one un-healthy habit.

I always thought losing weight (and sticking with it!!!!) was the hardest thing to do. I mean you can just cold turkey with anything else, but you HAVE to keep eating. But after reading some of the responses here, I wouldn't trade for nuthin'!

Edit: Thank God I never took a single DRAG off a cig. in my life!!

Just thought that would really help you out, CherryokeeXJ. :flipoff2:

Sounds a bit out there, but my Mom quit after seeing a hypnotist. I think it cost her a couple of hundered bucks. I laughed my ass off when she told me. I didn't think it would work and told her to give me the money to flush instead. The guy gave her a moneyback gaurantee and she only went in once.

It's been 3 years and not one smoke. No puffs from somebody else's or any cravings what so ever. I was shocked when she went a month.

I think for the hypnosis to work you have to want it to work.

Just eat junk food, soon you wont even think of the cigarettes.

I quit 2 years ago after smoking 30 years, and will never smoke again.

I used Zyban and "no" nicotine replacement(nicotine leaves your body in three days so why prolong that),seemed to cut the edge and made the ciggs taste nasty.

It gets better as time goes on,2 months and it was much better as far as cravings go.
When I had a craving I would look at my watch and say it will be gone in a few seconds and it would be.

Sunflower seeds also worked good for me(hand to mouth thing) and a support site to talk online to other people going through the same thing, the site was free to Colorado residents when I quit but I here you have to pay now.

They probly have a new one thats free now.

It's tough, you really have to want to do it but well worth it.

They were like $1 a box at Wal-Mart and I was going through almost a box a day for a while. Just keep at it!

Did I give you that Idea on here??? THat was my savior when I quit chewing.

So I quit Smoking almost 2.5 years ago. It was one of the hardest things I had ever done AT THE TIME. Then almost a year ago, I quit chewing. Talk about hard to do.... I used the patch, and GOBSTOPPERS. Once the patch was gone, I kept up a box a day GS habbit, but it got me through. Gum helped with the chewing, but not the smoking because I usually had a piece of gum with a smoke. Take your mind off it, and keep after it. You will be grateful when go to the Dr next time and they ask if you use tobacco, and you say NO!!!!

Also with the smoking, Once I had control of it, (2 months or so) I decided that if I wanted a smoke I would have one. Then one night of hard drinking in Alaska, I bought a pack and smoked the whole pack and half another while drinking (HARD). Woke up the next morning and lit one up... Bingo cured. Never had one since.

Side note. I could go back to chewing today like I never quit. For those of you who dip, I suggest you quit now, and get all the help you can. It is harder to give up than Heroin (so I hear).

Gob stoppers at wal mart are $.88 a box, and Walgreens has them for $1 a box. Even if you are going through 5 boxes a day (which your jaws will not allow for more than a day), you are better off than smoking.

Alright, it's off to the store tonight to stock up. I need gobstoppers, gum, sunflower seeds, and straws. I'm also told when cravings are at their worst, drink a glass of milk. Makes the thought of how smokes taste seem unappealing. I'm going to have to not drink for a while. If I drink, I must smoke. The two go together like peanut and butter.

I think I can do this. I've got so many great reasons not to. But here are the best two.

I don't want to croak before I get to meet their kids. I don't want to miss out on practicing their football passes because I can't run worth a damn. I don't want them to ever think "My mom is such a loser. She can't even go on a bike ride with me." That and I'm cute, and I don't want to sabotage that with yellow teeth, and an earlier on-set of wrinkles.:D

I'm done folks. Here's hoping I can be stronger than my habit. Thanks for all your support and quitting tips.

That was the exact reason I quit....

I went outside to smoke and my son came out with me without saying anything picked up a cig butt and asked me for my lighter... he was barely 3 at the time... that was my rude awakening.

Go for a run. That will make your lungs think twice.

5/26/2003 for me. I still get a jonesing every now and again but I know if I have a puff I'll be back to it again. So I wait and it goes away.

Found out I was a type 1 Diabetic (insulin dependant) so I quit in 2001 and believe me you will be very glad of it. Food is better, and I don't crave anymore. Bout a week was how long the crazies lasted for me. Be strong and have your hubby around you a lot, I'm sure he will appreciate the lack of stink.
