So some of you natives tell me this. Are there camel spiders or something that looks like a camel spider that lives here in CO? The other night after I got home from the hospital, This big assed spider jumped off my nightstand and into the floor. I should have taken a picture of it, but I didn't. I smashed it too bad, then got rid of it.
I have seen a lot of Camel spiders in the ME, adn this one looked like I remember them looking. It was about 1.5 inches long, and had the killer chompers etc.
BTW: Do not tell my wife that I found and killed this thing. She is deathly afread of spiders, and would never sleep again if she knew it was there.
Educate me please

When I found the first one out here, I did some researching on them. The front two "legs" aren't legs at all but are "mouth parts".
They are also known as wind scorpions and are supposed to be able to move really fast but none of the ones I've seen moved very fast, or very far for that matter. :D

A little related story.
I worked at the Adams Mark Hotel in KC for awhile. One sunday afternoon after brunch, I was closing up the kitchen and went into the pastry kitchen to close everything up. On the floor there was a spider that was so big I thought it was fake. I walked toward it and it moved. I grabbed an aluminum pie pan and tossed it on top of him. It started moving across the floor! I grabbed a few cook books and set them on the pan with a note saying "big F'n Spider" shut off the lights and left.
The next day the mantainance guy was not too happy... He figured it must have come from the service elevator shaft about 20 feet from where he was. He said there were 4 or 5 that he had seen down there before.

I work in a building that gets a lot of IT equipment in it that has been in one desert or another. The units bring that stuff in here and without failure one or two of those things comes out of their gear every time. I have seen guys jump up on top of 42U racks before trying to get away from them. Funny thing is they always climb up when they come out of the gear.

Holy cow I had to shut the 2nd video off it creeped me out so bad. watching that mouse flop around and then start squeeking after the spider nailed it a 3rd time was enough.
I'm not aracniphobic in the least, but plate sized spiders killing rodents and lizards is beyond normal. I don't think my wife would sleep for a month if I showed her, plus she'd have me sealing every window and crack shut permemantly in the house.

Yes there are "camel spiders" in the U.S. Not as big as the ones in the middle east though.
On a side note, a friend I work with got bit on the chest by a black widow this weekend. Went home after work and a few hours later got hauled off the hospital and could barley breathe. He's been in the hospital for 3 days now, the doctors didn't want to give him the anti-venom because its some really nasty stuff. Sounds like he'll be ok, but it was a pretty painful experience from talking with him.

What do you know, there really are barking spiders!
BTW, I once saw some big, 4-5" spider with a fairly small body south of The Fort in Morrison. It wasn't a tarantula, it was fairly light colored and not very hairy.
"Australian tarantulas or bird-eating spiders are also called whistling or barking spiders. The name is due to the humming noise they can produce when they are disturbed or threatened. They can be found in most parts of Australia and they live in burrows which can be up to a metre deep.
Australian Bird-eating Spider
Their overall size is slightly bigger than the Huntsman Spider, but because their body is bigger, the fangs longer and the legs thicker and stronger, they look a lot bigger...
Despite their name they rarely eat birds. Mostly they eat insects like all Australian spiders do, but also lizards and frogs."

Youre all a bunch of Nancies. Growing up in Texas, I used to keep tarantulas for pets. If they bite you it swells up and you feel like you have the flu for about a week. Normally they won't bite, but I did find something that really pisses them off. Never....I say NEVER blow on them. They go nuts. Let me tell you that they have fangs that are almost a half inch long.

Lay some ant bait and voila. But spiders....oooh no....spiders are born straight from the depths of hell, and must be sent back with a tuft of toilet paper, and a swirly ride down the chitter.

Spiders as a general rule don't bother me that much.... When I was a teen I spent a lot of horseback time on old logging roads scouting for the guide service I worked for. You would ride through a spider web about every 5 or so feet. However Camel spiders... That is another thing all together. And the 3 women I live with absolutely lose thier minds in the presense of spiders.
BTW: You can come up with some creative ways to get rid of spider webs out in front of you.

This one lived in our mailbox for a while in Adelaide. It was just a baby one though, only a couple inches across. I had an adult one in my classroom once. I was reading with a couple of my kids and I noticed a commotion on the other side of the room, I told them to get back to work. A few minutes later they're still off-task so I repeat the message, and they say, "But Mr. Houghton, it's a really big one!" I look over and sure enough there is the biggest damn spider I've ever seen (other than Rosie at the Butterfly Pavilion) on the inside of the window. I caught it in a jar and we kept it for the day, and let it out in the woodpile behind my classroom at the end of the day.
We had another one living in our wall that my wife (who HATES spiders) affectionately called Fred, the spider she'd like to be dead:
http://photos1.blogger.com/x/blogger/6705/1971/320/341860/Fred%20the%20black%20house%20spider%20%233.jpg
At first we thought Fred might be a funnel web, but after more research decided he was a black house spider - not usually life threatening, but you should seek medical attention if you get bitten. Fred lived peacefully for a while in the wall, but as soon as he decided to go live in the eaves he got a healthy (well, not so healthy in his case) shot of Mortein.
Still, they're nothing compared to those camel spiders. FAWK THAT!

I had some bigass spiders down at my last house in Lakewood, not quite as big as some of those but legs spread out to about 2.5 inches. Now my new house in Dumont has a nice little collection of Black Widows, and some big ones almost 2.5 inches in diameter with their legs spread out, not my favorite bug to mess with, I've bugbombed the house 4 times since I got my first female black widow crawling up my arm.

I freakin' hate spidies. I like snakes though & would rather have snakes cruising through the house than spidies. Poor lil ol' snakes get a bad rep. just because they ain't got legs. Spidies have too many legs. Snakes aren't rude like spidies. They will take every chance they get to go around you while a spidie will just walk right over you....
Stupid spidie.

Good Lord. This thread is freaking me out, and I generally LIKE spiders!
Coincidentally, I saw a client on Friday who had woken up with a huge welt on her stomach which was getting bigger as the day went on. She decided to squeeze into her Doctor's office, who told her she'd been bitten by a spider- he even showed her the dots that were fang marks.

According to national geographic, Camel Spiders aren't actually spiders.
"In fact, the creatures in the photo aren't spiders at all. They're actually solpugids, or solifugids (aka camel spiders, aka wind scorpions). Along with spiders, they are members of the class Arachnida.
The eight-legged solifugids have no venom glands, and the largest species is no more than 15 centimeters (6 inches) long with its legs outstretched. "
Here's the artcile.

That crab (or whatever the hell it is) would taste horrible...they're like lobsters, the small ones are sweeter (generally) and the bigger ones taste horrible because they are giant garbage disposals.

I'm guessing though that if a type of tarantula is in AZ it could very easily make it to CO. But next time I see one I want to capture it and either have it as a pet or give it to my cat, lol.

The funny thing about solifuges is, true to their name, they run from the sun, so a person in the desert, with the shade he provides, can find himself running from a wind scorpion that's chasing his shadow.

Tarantula Hawk to the rescue, too many spiders in this thread. The Tarantula Hawk stings the spider, placing it in a state of suspended animation, drags it into it's hole, and lays its eggs on it. That is one big scary wasp!

I saw this happen in real life. I was sitting on the back patio in Wheat ridge and a big wolf spider came walking out on the concrete probably 3 inches across. A big blue colored hornet came down on top of him, stung him under his belly and paralized him then dragged him back down a crack next to the foundation. I wished I would have had the camcorder for that one!
