I think for me it would have to see this old guy doing Spring Creek downward in a TJ. We also ran into a guy in a stock TJ with just a 2" BB going up it. I had trouble with my 33's and no locker.

A few years ago, when my Montero was stock, I ran Spring Creek (going up). I made it about half-way through the rock garden and had to get winched out.

Now? No problem.

I did Holy Cross years ago with stock tires, 235-85-16's, but I don't remember if I had my locker or not. I have made Spring Creek in a stock vehicle quite a few times, but it was a lot easier years ago. Other than those, I'd have to say Chinaman, which I have done recently in my other stock open vehicle.

Witnessed my father blast through Holy Cross in a totally stock 1968 Ford Bronco, on 31 inch mudders & a LS rear. He got all the way up to the city. Been 10 years since then, but I was impressed as hell then and I'm still impressed now, that he did it with NO breakage.

AFAIK, he was new to wheeling also.

Stockers have done the Rubicon. None of the trails mentioned even hold a candle to the Rubicon, yes, even Holy Cross.

It's amazing what a little rock stacking can accomplish.

I've done Carnage + Firemans Hill (Boulder) first trail I ran actually, Wheeler, Saran Wrap, Eagle Rock, Fins and Things, and a host of easier trails this summer all in a stock TJ on 30s open/open. I've got a little rocker panel damage, but otherwise no major failures yet.

was that my brother when we ran it that time? I was in the red YJ on 36s and he was in the chili pepper red TJ. That took a lot of spotting getting him through there!

anyway, that and Carnage boulder were the two that I've seen a stocker make it through w/o damage.

I remember a guy in a Chevy dually ran up Red Cone with us. I guess he had taken it down Webster, which was washed out at the time, and was probably so afraid to take it back up, that he decided to do red Cone. Once we got to where Red Cone and Webster meet, he showed us the damage. The drivers side of the plastic outer bed was completely missing, broken off on a tree on a tight turn. The passenger side had a big hole and crack. He didn't think his wife would be happy.

Ran up and back down Spring Creek through to top of rock garden and back down. No bypasses. 97TJ 4 hampsters, stock tranny, d-35 rear, no lift 31" AT's, open diffs, at night, by my lonesome 2001.
Stupid I know wheeling alone but that's how I used to run for years.

Same trail during the day, a roided jughead jock with a hot babe and TJ on 35's all chromed out with lockers and bolt on junk was stuck at the first little short rock section past the cliff area. After we tugged him out of his little prediciment, he looked in amazement and kinda embarrassed that I walked (throttled, ya know open diffs) up through the whole small rock section and even moreso through the rock garden. I think I had 2" body lift that time.

All about the tire placement and driver skill.

Ran Holy Cross in a stock 97 Tacoma x-cab with 31 BFG all terrains.
Had to use a come along at the first spot where the tree is on the left and the rock face to the right, and someone winched us up French Creek.
Ended up with some serious rear bumper damage, and had to make some spacers where the rear driveshaft and t-case out meet after being hung up on some rocks.
As far as Moab, the right driver can get a BMW or Lexus SUV over most the trails.

I bought my YJ in Nov 93' and in June or so of 94', I took it up Holy Cross. It was bone stock, still connected with the tract/sway bars, open diffs, etc.

Well back in 1982, there was some guys go up Holy Cross in a 82 Chev Luv 4x4. They were about 1/2 up from the 1st starting point to the cut in, exit, when I 1st saw them. I continued up all the way. On my way back they were at the 1st main obstical and it was beat to H.E double hockey sticks, but they were still going at it.

Asked them why they were beating up a new vehicle like that. They replied, because nobody has done it in a luv yet, we want to be the 1st to do the trail in one. No reply why a new one though.

Oh, edit to add, I was running it that day in a bone stock 80 CJ5.

Did schofield pass in a stock 88 trooper back on 1990, no problems other than blowing out a sidewall on the steep narrow rocky part. Wasn't much fun changing it there. Also did Poughkeepsie the same trip (from top to bottom) with no problems.

We took the stock sammi - with stock street tires - through chinamans a couple years ago with my son driving most of it. He was 15 at the time.

Back in 1962, we passed an abandoned 3/4 ton International 2wd pickup. He was past the second creek crossing and the French Creek ford, but broken down. He had chains on his rear tires. Also, down at Camp Fancy, on Fancy Creek, there used to be the remains of a Durant Star. I have no idea how it got there, but it had been there, I suppose, since the '20s.

Stockers have done the Rubicon. None of the trails mentioned even hold a candle to the Rubicon, yes, even Holy Cross.

It's amazing what a little rock stacking can accomplish.

Thank you for your post on Rubicon. I have a stock TJ Sahara with 31" Goodyear MT/Rs mounted on Moabs. Have all the skids and a winch. I have been thinking about doing the Rubicon.

I have run up Holy Cross twice in stockers.

Once in a 1985 Nissan IFS truck with 235's. Got to the now closed off Mud bogs (dating myself here but this was close to 20 years ago, hell most of you on here probably don't even remember how bad the area just above French creek really was before they finally blocked it all off and let it recoup...) The MHJ club had about 15 Jeeps all stuck in the bogs and parked all over the place so we turned around parked at French Creek and went back up to watch the show.

The second time was with my brand new 1989 wrangler with 500 miles on it and 235's where we went up to the city and stopped due to snow in July.

Both of those were back when 31's were considered a big off road tire.....lol

Trango,

You are right about the road. It goes on up to Fancy Lake, and then up to within 550 yds. of the summit of Fancy Pass. However, I
think that the road to Camp Fancy took off from the Holy Cross City road near the old powder house (a half mile above the French Creek ford. If you watch carefully as you drive that section, just before the old mill, you can see a trace of the old road go down into the woods. I followed it once for a long way and then gave up for whatever reason. Anyway, the remains of the Durant Star are (were) impressive, particularly the ornate radiator and Durant Star emblem. I saw that stuff nearly 40 years ago, so I don't know how much of it, if any, is still there. Once when I was up at the City in the late '50s, a sheepherder with whom I was friends, found a one cylinder diesel down in the woods that has been used to power a Wilfley table, and he dragged it out to Gold Park on a makeshift travois.

Did Iron Chest in a stock '86 Mitsubishi Montero (aside from 31" Baja Claws). This was before the original rock garden was removed ('96ish - rock garden was removed '02ish)). IIRC I only had to stack once through the rock garden. I don't think I'd ever had a better lesson on learning where your pumpkins and plates are. My underside was perfectly polished in all the right spots. I wish I had that same rig still to try it again on the new rock garden.

When we got back down I was checking the underside for carnage when a group of modded CJ's showed up.

The group lead assumed that I got bashed on the first corner and turned back and tried to assure me that I'd never be able to do that trail. When I mentioned that I was actually on my way down from havin' lunch at the mine he seemed pretty upset.

That same year I took a stock FJ-40 (aside from a detroit in the rear) up Blanca Peak. Plenty of body damage to balance out my humility on that one though.

I ended up doing that in a '05 Subaru Outback last summer. Not that I'm trying to one up you ... man in a F250 crewcab open on both ends that must have been rough. A small AWD vehicle doesn't even compare.

I pulled a extended Big Dodge pu off the edge a while ago guy had a come-along tied to his bumper with what looked like parachute cord and a srcub oak on the other when I got to him. Took a lot of winch angle to get him out of the way. Then about a mile of me backing up so he could pass.

:lmao: What, you're saying SPring Creek doesn't look like that anymore?!?

I remember doing the Chutes @ Kelly Flats last year and having someone tell me they did it in their stock long bed pickup 20 years ago and how easy of an obstacle it was. That pissed me off considering I just made it with body damage...things change:rolleyes:

I run Kelly several time per year.

About a year ago I bypassed the Chutes in my stock ZJ.

There were no bypasses back in the day, so:
About 20 years ago I did the Chutes in a stock F150 and a stock K5.
About 30 years ago I did the Chutes in a stock CJ5.
About 40 years ago my dad did the Chutes in a stock 2wd 1950 dodge.

In my bone stock 70 K5, 6 cylinder, 3 speed, I did most of Chinamans. I turned back when the steering wheel had crumpled to nothing but the wire rim.

Went to Moab last month in my stock 78 Bronco(with 33" ATs). I ran Hells Revenge with a bad PS pump and a steering box that would lock up. Going back next year with 4" lift and 37s.

Stockers have done the Rubicon. None of the trails mentioned even hold a candle to the Rubicon, yes, even Holy Cross.

It's amazing what a little rock stacking can accomplish.I did the Rubicon back in '03 in the Rubicon Outfitters XJ. There was a local gal running it in her stock 48 Willys wearing NDTs...no rock-stacking either. Of course, with a Jeep that light, it didn't take much to get her relocated and moving again either.

I took my stock Ranger through Spring Creek.

Heres how it went:

Friend rolls his Toy on the hump rock (don't know the name) I bypass and spend two hours getting his truck righted and running again. He and some others go home. Me and two others continue. The other 4xs are a Explorer with 36 Irocs locked front and rear and another Ranger with the same.

1. Gate Keeper

Smashed my front bumper against the first big rock, stuck. Backed up and tried to climb the rock with right front wheel. It went up about a foot and slid down and I was stuck on the rock. Hooked up strap and my bud who was leading drags me up over the obstacle.

Damage:
Bend bumper and scraped all of the skidplates.

2. Rock Garden

Looked up at it and was very scared! But can't really go back now. Smashed TTB against rock in the first 10 feet. Hit hard enough I thought it should have deployed airbags. Slowly pick my way to the bypass. The one on the right side. They tell me that it was the bypass. I said that you are freekin kidding me! I start through the bypass and immediatly hit a root with the bed and dent it very nicely! After a few realighnments to my line I make it through. I had spent so much time looking at the bypass I thought I was done, NO. I was spotted through the next 50 feet and made it with little drama. I was full of adreniline (SP) at that point and promtly smashed my mirror into and tree and its distroyed! OK, slowly pick my way through to the top.

Damage
Bed side pushed in but able to pop it out with only a small crease. Mirror gone and a dent and scrape on door where it pinned it. Clutch ware bad but unknown.

Moral of this story.
Making it through a trail is one thing, bouncing off every rock and destoying your ride is another.

PS, after that experience I now have 6" of lift, 33" tires and lockers, winch, sliders and more. I did that trail by myself at the end of this summer with only a few issues.

I had never done any 4 wheeling when I picked up a sweet deal on a 1999 stock Wrangler TJ that had never been off-road. My first venture was with a friend who was driving a lifted Jeep Cherokee. The Battlement Lakes trail was only a couple of miles from where I live so why not? I did not even know enough to lower the tire pressure.

With my wife as spotter, we crawled to the lakes without mishap. I have to admit that when I arrived, my mouth was too dry to spit. My major worry was, "How will I ever get back down that trail?" After two nights camping, we made it back down in the totally stock TJ.

Since then, the TJ has been lifted 4 inches. The tires have been upgraded to 33 x 12.5 Dick Cepek's. Differentials have been regeared with a TruTrack rear differential.

I love that little Jeep! :)

I took my stock Bronco up Carnage Canyon Boulder, suffered damage, but I made it. Starkman was there watching it all (running a different tag name over here for no apparent reason but because I felt that way)
