View Full Version : Schofield closed?

Anyone heard anything about this or driven it lately?
Erik asked me."We'd like to go do Schofield Pass this month, and it's been a while, so I called the USFS to check on closures or other info. I've always gotten the impression that their policy is just to generally discourage use of this trail whenever asked about it, but this time they went one better: a woman specifically told me that there's a spot on the ledge over the Punchbowl that's "only 3 feet wide now", and really only ATVs could get past it. I asked again to make sure I'd heard her correctly, and she repeated it.

Somehow I'm just not inclined to believe that, so: has anyone driven the Punchbowl this season, and could you give us a report?

Thanks -- Eric Meyer."

We drove it from the Marble side over to Crested Butte Aug 24th and all is well. The first climb out of the punchbowl is graded up to the metal bridge. There were no spots that even made me look twice in a cherokee, so if in fact it is closed it would've happened in the last 10 days. Hope that helps!

I have heard that there is some construction in the works on the road from Crystal to Marble. Otherwise, I've seen several reports of people running the Gothic -> Crystal route this summer. I haven't been down there yet myself and might not make it until the end of September.

I'm heading down next week, so if anyone could confirm that would be great. We're going to run Pearl and Schofield assuming all is well.

Can someone post to this forum if they find out?

I ran it last week.

Open as it can be. no issues at all.

In fact all the rocks have been removed from the devils punch bowl section and the holes all filled in. It has been easy-fied quite a lot.

We did, however do lead king basin instead of the crystal to marble section, so I can not talk about that section.

But Scholfield pass and the devils punchbowl is open and in easy shape.

I did the section that goes from Marble to Crystal on my ATV a month ago. It was rockier than I remember it (last time I ran it was about 3 years ago). I think it is still quite do-able in a stock rig and would not hesitate to take my truck up there. The bridge is being worked on and there is a bypass that takes you through the stream.

A few weeks ago we were in Crystal talking to one of the summer residents. She said that the road from Marble to Crystal was going to be closed after Labor Day because the road crew was going to be redoing a drain/bridge that provided access from Marble to Crystal. She said if you wanted to reach Crystal after Labor Day you'd have to go left at the lake and go up through the basin and then drop into Crystal from the back. Can't remember the road names, but that was what she said, and she was pretty upset about it.
