View Full Version : LHC Post & Cable - Sept 19th & Sept 22nd

September 4th, 2007, 11:06 AM
Again, the P&C is on a Wednesday so it is hard to get volunteers during the week so if you can make it, sign up! I did a rehab project with WLRV @ LHC last year and was the only 4-wheeler there. It was a great opportunity to meet with "greenies" and engage in respectful conversation. I was even able to change some of their views on 4-wheelers and show them that even 4-wheelers hate the bad apples and not everyone is like that. The restoration work (Sept 22nd) isn't hard work compared to the Post & Cable so if you're looking for the easier work, show up for that. Last I heard they only had about half the volunteers they needed.
Protect Watershed and Improve Scenery along FR286 -- Sep 19 ? VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Please join us to help construct a post and cable barrier to protect forest habitat in Left Hand Canyon, along the FR286 corridor. This fence will protect denuded eroding areas that will be restored by volunteers the following Saturday, Sep 22. This restoration will protect and enhance many acres of wildlife habitat and make the drive along FR286 more scenic.
TO SIGN UP, OR TO GET MORE INFO
Visit our website (www.wlrv.org) and click on "Projects & Trainings", then "Current Project Schedule", scroll down and click the "Left Hand Canyon Protection Barrier" link. You will need to log in to complete the registration. If you have never volunteered with WRV before, you will need to create an account. It's really easy!! If you have volunteered with WRV before, you already have an account. If you know the username and password, use them to log in. If you don't know them, it's easy to retrieve them.
You can also send an email to info@wlrv.org or call 303-543-1411 to register, but the online method is preferred.
Additional project-specific details will be sent to you once you register.
SPREAD THE WORD
Most volunteers find out about WRV projects by word of mouth, so please spread the word and invite friends, family and all those who want to improve Lefthand Canyon OHV Area.

Do you know the details of the when and where in case we don't get them in time?
ArloGuthroJeep
September 11th, 2007, 01:22 PM
They haven't sent out the details yet. When they do I'll post them up. However if you sign up for the project, you'll get the details yourself from them anyways. Everyone (since none of them drive 4x4's) parks in the canyon and walks up the trail to get to the site so if you were to drive up the trail, you would find them. I can't rememeber for sure but I want to say it is below 5-points where the work will be done. Don't quote me on that though.

Details:
Dear Ryan,
Thank you for registering for the Left Hand Canyon Forest Restoration Project on Saturday, September 22. You?ll be part of a large and important effort to improve forest habitat and enhance local water quality. This message contains all the
details about the project. Please read THOROUGHLY.
We hope that you are still planning to come, but if you can't attend, please let us know! That is essential for planning purposes. WE NEED EVERY VOLUNTEER TO MAKE THIS PROJECT A SUCCESS.
OVERVIEW
Forest habitat along Forest Road 286, in Left Hand Canyon, have been severely impacted by years of motorized recreation. The Forest Service and many members of the motorized community agree that this area needs help. Over the past three years, Wildlands Restoration Volunteers collaborated with the Forest Service, Trail Ridge Runners, and others, to complete the first three phases of an award-winning restoration project. In 2007, Wildlands Restoration Volunteers will collaborate with the Forest Service to continue the multi-year effort to restore the area. This year, we?ll concentrate our efforts to close and restore over a dozen spur roads in the FR286 corridor. This work will benefit the entire watershed by reducing the extreme erosion of the site, thus improving downstream stream habitat and water quality. The restoration area will be protected by post and cable fencing installed the week before the project. Volunteers will seed multiple areas and apply straw mulch and erosion fabric.
Rain Date (if needed): Saturday, October 6. Please reserve this date if possible.
PROJECT SCHEDULE
7:45 AM: MEET AT CARPOOL POINT, THEN CARPOOL TO PROJECT SITE. Work will begin after volunteers arrive on site.
4:30 PM (Approximately): Finish Restoration Work. Live music and party afterward. We hope you can stay for the festivities
CARPOOL INFORMATION
We'll meet at a carpool point, north of Boulder on Hwy 36 at 7:45am. From here, we'll carpool to up into Left Hand Canyon to a pull out along Left Hand Canyon Drive and walk up a steep ridge to the project site.
DIRECTIONS TO CARPOOL POINT
FROM BOULDER: From the intersection of Lee Hill Drive and Broadway in north
Boulder, take Hwy 36 north out of town. Drive about 2.5 miles. On the left hand side you?ll see a large warehouse building (McGuckins warehouse). Turn left and park in the large parking lot. You should see a "WRV VOLUNTEER PROJECT" sign showing the way. If you reach Neva Road, you've gone to far north.
FROM LONGMONT: Take the Diagonal Highway (Hwy 119) toward Boulder. Turn right on Niwot Road and head west. After several miles, Niwot Rd jogs north on 45th Street and then turns back west to become Neva Road. Continue on Neva Rd until you reach Hwy 36. Turn left (south) on Hwy 36 and drive a bit over 0.1 miles. On the right hand side you?ll see a large warehouse building (McGuckins warehouse). Turn right and park in the large parking lot. You should see a "WRV VOLUNTEER PROJECT" sign showing the way.
REGISTRATION
Everyone will "sign in" at the carpool point. Here you can get a cup of coffee and grab a bagel or muffin if you like. Since parking is limited near the project site, everyone will need to carpool from here. A volunteer at the registration table will be able to help you form carpools.
DIRECTIONS FROM CARPOOL POINT
Parking is VERY LIMITED near the project site, so carpooling is essential! From the carpool/registration area, drive about 2.5 miles north on Hwy 36. Turn left (west) on Left Hand Canyon Drive. Drive about 3.7 miles up Left Hand Canyon Drive. The shoulder widens as you approach the turn off to Forest Road 286. Volunteers will park along the saddle or in a small parking area near the turn off.
DIRECTIONS FROM PARKING AREA to WORKSITE
Walk up Forest Road 286. After a few hundred yards, the road switchback turns to the left. Continue another two hundred yards to the project staging area. The total walk is less than 10 minutes. If you arrive on time, someone will be at the parking area to guide you, but if you must be late, you?ll need to find your own way.
WHAT TO BRING
Please bring the following items: 3 quarts of drinking water, snacks, work gloves, work boots, sunscreen, a hat, a pocket knife, rain gear and layered clothing
appropriate for the weather.
You do NOT need to bring any tools. These will be provided by Wildlands Restoration Volunteers.
LUNCH
A wholesome lunch (with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options) will be served. We are trying to accommodate a spectrum of dietary needs. If you have special needs, you can either bring your own lunch, or contact Angela Tirr-Van Do at atvando@boulderassociates.com or 303-775-2050 to see if special food accommodations are possible. Everyone should bring snacks in case they get hungry before or after lunch.
PARTY AFTER PROJECT
Starting immediately after the project, live music will be provided by the Swamp Koolers, a local band from Jamestown. Finger foods will be served.
WEATHER CONTINGENCIES
Weather in September is quite variable and unpredictable. We will attempt to work in mildly adverse weather (e.g. cold, cloudy, light snow, etc.) If there is any doubt about the weather on the morning of the project day, please check your e-mail for a project update or call 303-543-1411 after 6:30am for an update on whether we plan to work or not.
If have to postpone the project due to weather, the reschedule date is two weeks later on Oct 6. Please reserve this in your calendar.
IF a postponement happens, please send e-mail or call to confirm you can attend the backup date.
IF YOU ARRIVE LATE
If you arrive late to the carpool point, the carpool will be over. You'll need to
drive directly to the project parking area up on Left Hand Canyon Drive. Most
likely, you'll arrive to find the closest parking FULL. You may need to drive up or down Left Hand Canyon Drive for up to a half mile to find an alternate parking spot and then walk back to the pull-out area to hike up the ridge to the worksite.
FOR MORE INFORMATION
If you have any additional questions, contact Ed Self at edself@wlrv.org or
303-543-1411.
Thanks for your participation!

what i cant get is why people buy into the whatershed cry and the other junk. i have the reports. the town of jamestown creates for more sediment etc... lets reclaim that area.
i do not buy their claims.your posts indicate that you do. show me the evidence. i want to see more opertunities up there. why dont you?

First I never stated any of my views on LHC in this thread. To me this isn't about the watershed, this project is about A) Keeping people on the trail (post & cable ie: Wedesnday) and B) Restoring the area (restoration ie: Saturday).

September 16th, 2007, 10:07 PM
ok,
your first post appears to me as though you support the propaganda contained in it.
sorry if its not your position. id just like to point out that just because the fs and the wrv says something, does not make it so. i think its important to help but i think its a mistake to purpetuate their junk
as far a restoration, im not seein that need. the earth is much more durable then they give it credit for. the object is to close the area.

It'll heal...time heals everything. Restoration does the same thing a hell of a lot quicker;)

September 16th, 2007, 10:42 PM
yes, i agree.
but the point is: the brd is having all this done so that they can close the area and have it look nice from the air or to the hikers. they have no intention of having motorized for much longer.
id like to see that money and effert go toward roads and im wondering why you dont share that?
oleblue
September 16th, 2007, 10:45 PM
Correct me If I'm wrong, but last I knew, that area was not to be closed but turned into a fee area. Some trails closed but others opened up.
vb
September 16th, 2007, 10:48 PM
thats what they "said"
it is not the truth.
i could dirrect you to an enitre large loop that is effectivly closed now that was supposed to remain open. simply because the fs changed their mind

You are absolutely mistaken, I have participated in the LH meetings on a monthly basis and a great deal of effort is being put into keeping the area open, because they realize use will spread elsewhere and cause widespread damage.
Yes, many routes (especially in riparian areas impacting water quality) will be closed. Other user created routes (meaning, recently created) will actually be established as official routes. A rock crawl area will be established once a grant is written by Trail Ridge Runners that breaks the work into yearly chunks that don't eat up the entire OHV fund in a year!
Much can be truthfully said about the BRD and OHV recreation, but your post is patently false.
I call total BS. The fact that you can make these things up out of whole cloth deep sixes your credibility completely.
vb
September 19th, 2007, 03:58 PM
believe what you want.
i participated in those meetings long before you did.
im a land owner holding property in the ohv area itself. i just had a meeting with the fs on monday. you were not there. you were not asked to be there. you dont even have an idea of how many closed door meetings decide whats going on up there. i also know all of the rest of the land owners there and ive delt with the county and the brd for 8 plus years on these things.
time will tell
show me the studies that show the water quality has been impacted
and you are also wrong about the difinition of a user created route. your friends at the brd have a much diferent view of a user created route. a user created route can indeed be a 150 year old road.
you need to good check yourself. your ignorance shows

I was just up there today, working. What was closed off are the stupid illegal hill climbs, and where people are cutting corners because they are too f-ing lazy to go around the existing corner. On one spot I saw, one if the tire tracks on a hill climb has eroded into a 5 foot deep ditch. Right next to it is another path that is extremely eroded as well. If you want to bitch about something, bitch aboput the idiots who make us have to do all these repairs. BTW, the ranger looks at this forum and laughs at posts like yours.

Got done at about 2:30. there may have been a few up top that didn't get done, but those will be tackled Sat if they didn't get done. Ran a little short on concrete. Other than that, everything went fine. Americorps were there also, so we had 20 something people working.
