Hey, here is just a sampling of some pictures I took a few days ago at the track. I realize that these aren't quite as cool of cars as STi's and that most of these drivers only wish they could flog an STi on a track. But they weren't bad cars none-the-less. I guess a few of these would maybe be on the verge of being supercars....
Enjoy the photos.

Wait, is this Nurburgring?
DanaT
September 3rd, 2007, 04:23 PM
Local is all relative. It is only a 1.5 hour drive (depending upon speed) from one of the office branches. But its very local to Nuerburg.
The key is to get there at 5:00pm. The track opens up at 5:15pm to the public and closes at 7:00pm. During the day, you never know what you will see. It depends upon who has rented it.

Looks like you were keeping up with the 400 horse Bimmer. Nice- looks like a Bimmer you're in as well. Another 3 series- same one as your other post?
Great photos- I bet that was a lot of fun! Thanks for posting those up.

Ahhh..liked the first version better.....
But yes, it is the nuerburgring...the Nordschliefe
I was also breaking the rules. Cameras are expressly forbidden. The laps in the M3 were low 10 minute laps. That may seem slow, but its not. Keep in mind that was street tires, driveing to from track, etc.

I wasn't driving. :( I was filming. I had a BMW 320d rental car. Rental cars are not allowed on the track.
The car I took those photos in was an AC Schnitzer M3. It actually faster than the Yellow M3. I rode in both and filmed both cars. I just don't have still photos from inside the yellow car.
It is fun to see someone sliding a $75000+ car (keep in mind cars cost more there) at 110-120mph through a corner and not really caring about it.
What really impressed me is how hard a 911 Turbo came by us. He had at least 20mph high corner speed and pulled away hard.
That track is damn hard. Made harder by the Citroen 2CVs that decide to drive it and become move obsticles. Really, there was a 2CV on the track. Biggest a$$ as a Renault Minivan that thought he was fast. You are supoosed to let the faster cars pass, but he was cutting in on cars in corneres and not letting people pass.

With more than 50% of the corners being blind, you had better know it somewhat. I would love to play on that track. 2nd Creek just didn't cut it. :)
I see the new ZO6 did it in 7.42 on runflats.

Yes SSI. Those are record runs. I bet that Z06 had a professional driver, crew, etc. I would also bet that it was done on a closed track. When you have the whole track, and no 2CV as moving traffic cones, times go down.
In fact, if they are timing you KNOW the track is closed as you have about 200 yards of the track that is closed during opne days (i.e. its 19 Euro per lap and you have to pull off and pay for the next lap).

Yes, almost all of those times are done with Pros on a closed track.
Walter Rohrl on the list. I recognized that name, even over here. I think he has almost more time on the Ring than anyone if I recall correctly. I watched a video once of him driving the Ring and it is was VERY exciting just watching the video. The speeds he was carrying into blind corners was nuts. A fantastic Pilot.
You can let them know over there, that the Ring is VERY well known over in the states. Also envied. :)
I really like this video too. That Lotus is a sweet race car.

An evo is WAY faster then an sti stock for stock on a track. The sti only has the advantage in the straight line and thats only because of the extra .5L the udsm sti's have look at the sti's in japan (there 2.0l over there just like evos), they get dominated in every motor sport by the evos.

Hands down performance wise evos own the stis. My buddy has an MR out in Vegas and is pushing 350 awdhp w/ only a full TBE and pipes plus a reflash. Best you can do on a stock turbo subi is ~300.
Why I bought the sti over the evo was the opportunity for a certified used ride (a new one was well out of my budget), and hands down subi has better warranty service. I would be sketched out buying a used evo. I know a guy who blew 4th gear w/ 3500 miles on his new evo and was denied warranty. Plus better insurance rates, etc.
I've ran w/ an evo 7 or 8 (don't really know which) and pulled on him hard, but he also had 4 people in the car, and 2 of them were squeezed in there, prolly a 600 lb advantage to me.
I'm going out to vegas this fall to run w/ these guys out on the dry lake.

Dry lake? Dude, you're in for some fun. I had my A4 at El Mirage one year. We went out to watch the land speed events.
After it was over, you have to drive a few miles back to the road- on the lakebed. Can you say big drifts at 100MPH? SUPER fun.
If you're out there the third weekend of Sept, check out the Silver State Classic Challenge on hwy 318 between Hiko and Lund- just north of Vegas. A few fast cars show up.......... www.sscc.us

well ill be the first to admit that i dont have nearly as much knowledge on the sti as i do the evo. Im kinda partial to mitsu since i drive a dsm. But the stock evo turbo is a 16g, which i have on my talon, and that a pretty small turbo. So based on the picture the stis have like a t-25 size turbo which i don't think is right. In a straight line like i said the sti will take an evo because of the displacement. But like you said the potential when modifying goes to the evo hands down! Not only for ease of installation due to the 4g63 motor it has being a in-line four opposed to a flat four. But the aftermarket base is getting much bigger for evos. They run all the normal aftermarket stuff stock so its much easier to run, lets say a bigger fmic. Have you seen how much piping it takes to runs an fmic on an sti, its ridiculous!

I like the looks of the ECVO much better. However, if I were buying one, I would buy the STi. Why? Better dealer network. I don;t think Mitsu is real stable in the market at the moment.
As much as I rag on STi (and the EVO is in the same boat), they are actually pretty impressive cars. I look at them as the poor mans (ok..average mans) S4. All-in-all, for what people pay for these things, you get a lot of car.

No they are 16g's they just have a 10.5 hotside on the turbo which the VIII's dont have.
