View Full Version : Off Topic Subforum idea: Mountain Biking / Road Cycling

I know *lots* of people on this board also ride.

I'd like to have a subforum to discuss all manner of bike stuff with the same people I wheel with and to discuss how we combine these hobbies.

What say the masses?

I'd be for it

I'm up for it, but I wonder at what point does this forum have too many sub-forums?

I've seen other start-up forums that start out with so many subforums that none ever gathers the critical mass required of a successful community.

CO4x4 has so many members that I think it can support these specialty subforums. I do agree that there comes a point where subforums can become counterproductive but they don't have to if they're used in the right spirit.

For instance, I don't think that having the "Firing Range" subforum should necessarily mean that every firearm-related thread must be moved there. Subforums, IMHO, should be places for discussing the details and minutia of side hobbies that are tangential to what we're all here for: OHV stuff.

A mountain bike/road cycling forum, in my view, would be about the details and minutia of the hobby but it might also draw out stories and questions that might not otherwise come out on this board because it's off topic (not that gen chit chat isn't off topic anyway). I don't think the purpose of a subforum should be to rid the main forum (chit chat) of all threads pertaining to that subject.

Krispy Kreme... Not for the faint of heart (http://images.coloradocg.com/5ReasonsNotToEatKrispyKreme.jpg).

I ride, but haven't in over a year :(

I'd definitely be up for it. I'm fairly new to riding myself, and would love to gets some tips on bike maintenance from the knowledgable folks.

Who else wants a bicycle subforum?

I've had several topics I've been wanting to talk about. Bike maintenance, components, trail details, etc. but I don't want to pollute the Chit-Chat forum with a slew of threads on bike minutia that wouldn't appeal to a broad audience.

I'm sure I'd post in it once in a while. I ride quite a bit, or a least before this summer I did :D I've been too busy to ride as much as I want but, I patrol in Buffalo Creek so I have an excuse to get on the bike a few times a year.

Just a question, is there a way to open it up to other disciplines? I'm concerned that cycling is going to be too specific, especially in the winter months. Perhaps something that covers cycling, running, snowshoeing, rock climbing, etc. etc.? Just thinking out loud.

And SCUBA diving. We need a forum for that. :D

Oh, and hot air ballooning. No, wait, I'd be the only poster in that one.

That is a good point. Maybe the forum is more of an outdoor activity forum that isn't motorized. I can't come up with a catchy name yet as I just got my coffee and haven't drank much of it :D

I like the idea of including climbing, running, and snowshoeing. I can't think of much else that would fit in there that isn't covered by the suggested topics/titles.

Maybe call it "The Training Room" or something like that since most people participating in those activities are physically training in one way or another.

Oh, and we already knew Steve was full of hot air :flipoff2:

Thats a good idea. One forum for general outdoor sports/activities. Anymore, I 4x4 more to get somewhere to go climbing/camping/hiking than to actually go wheeling.

I'd post there too. I participate in a multitude of outdoor activities without being attached to a motor.

Thanks, I'm aware of it I just haven't had a chance to add it to the filter.

Guess I'm confused - why wouldn't I want it to show up when I select "New Posts"?

You might want it to, but I don't. The Off Topic section is just that, explicitly off topic. The approach from the start is that these subforums are effectively stand-alone entities (enveloped by the site-wide rules of conduct), they each even have their own dedicated moderator. It's a compromise between adding some explicit diversity, while minimizing the dilution of this site's core focus. As mentioned elsewhere, you're welcome to tailor the search to meet your needs by customizing a shortcut. Click on New Posts and look at the URL, the numbers after the "exclude" statement are the affected forum id's.

No issue from me.. guess I didn't realize that none of the other off-topic forums didn't come up on "New Posts" (well other then the NSFW forum).

Makes perfect sense.
