My mom hooked us up with the carpet they just took out of their house. It's in perfect shape and it's big enough for the three rooms we have to do. My question is related to installation. Do we have to hire someone to install it, or can we rent the carpet stretcher thingy? I'm trying to save cost from every angle so we can fix the pad up for minimal expense. My cousin knows how to do everything, we just lack equipment. Info?

I'd also like to mention we're dumping a ton of furniture to downsize our moving load, and if anyone here is in need of a bedroom set (two dressers, night stand) or some other odds and ends (huge area rug, two end tables, two couches, upright freezer with lock and key, crib, kitchen table with four chairs, small rolling cabinet made of oak) pm me and I'll shoot you some photos of my goodies.

Thanks all.

you're really going to pay for that one with this crowd.....

Yes, All Rental on Austin Bluffs has the carpet stretchers. I think we paid $25 for all day but that was a couple of years ago.

harbor freight sells kickers for $25 they suck but will work for 1 job
HF also sells a power stretcher, but its only 6' long (closet stretcher) it can be modified with poles for cheap

You may need to run seems which requires a seaming iron, tape, etc

If you want a professional installer to come and install your rug for you let me know, my girl has a carpet business and 4 crews of installers, she is always handling jobs like this (install only, customer supplied materials, etc) and the price is CHEAP

Personally I'd pay to have it done right. There are very few construction/home improvement jobs I won't do, but carpet installation is one. There's an art to the proper procedure of stretching and seaming so it doesn't look like a complete hack did it.

Home Depot also rents all the carpet installing tools you'll need from knives, kickers to stretchers and seamers.
