My POS light in the kitchen is out again. I replaced the balist, both of them, about a year ago and they are shot already. I knew I should have replaced the lighting then.
Don't really have a chioce now.

I thought joists were supposed to be 16" on center. The ones in my ceiling are 24" and those are right in the middle of where I want to put my lights.

Truss spacing (joists support the floor) depends on snow load, materials used, and truss design. Mine are 2x6 on 24" centers on a brand new home with a 40lbs/sq ft snow load.

16s are common for floors and walls... And sometimes trusses like CDP said. But should be 16 if your room in question is on the first floor of a 2 story design. 24 is just as common pending on material used for the roof system.
The power box from the old light should be attached to at least one ceiling truss/rafter???
Can you get up into the attic at all? If you can find the trusses and cut some blocking to span them with 2x4s, shoot some screws, and you should be good to go!!

I was trying to stay out of that bug factory but Lowes didn't have the convertor cans that I need so I guess I'm going up in the morning.
Did I say no more balists? I think I spoke a bit too soon.
I really hate crawl spaces and attics.

Tells you just how much ceiling work I've done. Painting yes, holes no.

Homes are so much fun. I got tired of replacing the balists yearly. So I said the heck with it and replaced everything, except the wires in the house. Replaced complete fixtures and switches. Been working for 2 years now :D

I've been pig-tailing the wiring as I go because I am NOT replacing all of it.

I've got can lights in all the bedrooms. They shut off if they overheat. Mine are rated to have insulation blown over 'em, but I'm going to have to go up and build boxes over them. After about an hour, the rooms turn into a light show.
Compact flourescent bulbs don't make 'em overheat, but the blue color makes the room look like a Sting concert.

I went to Lowe's to get the boxes and they were out, HD also. I cut into the ceiling this morning and I think I can pull out enough insulation to clear 3" all around. The only thing that is a pain is that there's about a 5" layer of loose insulation with about the same of sheet on top of that. Got a face full of the loose stuff as soon as the hole was done.

Someone should be SHOT! I just opened the box from the old light to tap into the wires.
I'm going into the attic now. If you don't hear from me in about 2 hours you'll know that the bugs got me or I got pissed and fell through.
A new balist is looking better all the time.

I need to figure out another option here. That is maybe, MAYBE, 18".

Soooooo, I called my son and asked him how he found anything in that attic last year when we did the cooler. I just wanted to know if he moved all of that insulation because in some areas it's three layers high.
OMG!!!!!! He had a flippen fit.
"Mom, you are not going in there"............"Mom, NO it's too hot up there and how are you going to get back down without someone holding the ladder?...........MOTHER, if you go in that attic I'm going to be really pissed at you". I'm never called mother, maybe a mother. :flipoff2:
Geeeeeeeze, when did he get so bossy?
Guess I'm waiting until Saturday to finish the wiring.

And you sent that kid up there when he has asthma?????? :tisk:

he just went on his own.
That's because you have a very nice son and he always wants to help. Alex said that he would go up there on Saturday so I'll just have everything ready and he'll just have to fish wires. I might re-texture the ceiling tomorrow and then I'll just have to paint when all is done.
