Man a couple of those where really great slip landings! I'm glad they showed in some of the clips how it's done & not just the screw ups.

I used to practice slipping my RC planes in a good croswinds.

This is what I would really hate though. http://www.coasttocoastam.com/gen/page2173.html?theme=light

Well I can't watch the video, stupid work filter. However, most airliners use the crab and kick out method, not slips and with their long wings, you can drag a wingtip in a slip low to the ground. However, small planes use slips all the time. I prefer slips in a crosswind.

When I flew to Ft Hood last week the landing in Killeen was pretty bad. I was sitting just in front of the wing and as we came in I was looking straight down the runway out the window. The pilot did a good job but it was pretty disconcerting to realize that we were flying sideways at the runway.

Hate flying commercial, ever since I flew in to tampa once, theres one runway that stick out into tampa bay, and i got to watch the port wingtip come about 6 inches from touching the water as we banked in to the end of that runway, I know it wasnt on purpose, one little wake off a boat, or wave, would have reached out, and touched us in a very very bad way.

Those are the flights that are the most fun! :D My favorite is anything involving low-G or negative G... dunno why, but I love that stomach in the throat feeling :D

I love that feeling too, just not with a couple thousand pounds of fuel in the wings.

As you might guess from his screen name, Pilot knows that about which he speaks as usual. :D I can't see the vid either. Damn net nannies.

I too prefer to slip in a crosswind. In fact, like Pilot, I'll often fly right down final with my wings banked into the crosswind but on a completely straight course. The bank counteracts the crosswind, but you have to hold opposite rudder to keep the airplane from turning. By doing this, it allows me to fly a completely stabilized approach - which means that nothing changes at the last second. You actually hold that bank all the way through the flair, past the touchdown and even after slowing down you maintain the ailerons in a fully deflected turn "into the wind" even though the plane is no longer flying and the wings are now parallel to the ground. This helps keep the wind from tipping the plane on its side.

The other school of thought is that you should keep wings level on final but "crab" or point your nose into the crosswind a little. Most Airliners (and some low-wing aircraft) are forced to use this method. The problem with this method is that you can't land a small plane that way safely because you'd be landing with your nose at an angle to the runway - tires don't like that very much. So they still have to bank the wings and horse the nose around straight before touchdown - and that's a lot of crap changing at the last second and many pilots screw it up (even the most experienced pilots). So stabilized approaches are for me.

That said, I believe I read someplace that 747's main gear can rotate so that they could actually land with the fuselage at a slight angle to the runway if need be. Unverified, but I think I saw a vid of it once.

Some of those were of the 777 testing their crosswind landings. Not sure were that airport is, but 60 mph cross winds are nearly constant

Like the other two pilot dudes on here i only do slips, and will only teach my students slips. Cool thing about the 747 and the B-52 on the military side is when they crab they can actually turns all their wheels so they are going straight down the runway, even though the body of the plane is crooked. It is funny though when i take hot shot jet boys up to get them recurrent and they try to crab a cessna 172, doesnt work boys. At least it makes me feel better about myself!
