I have to work, so I can't attend.   But if you live in Kansa-rado, or you've "got it bad" and want to drive a few hours, this might be worth checking out:

Sandhills ORR King of the Hill Challenge. It's a 1/2 mile and a 1 mile speed contest. Basically, how fast will your ride go in either of those distances.

I believe 198 is the record for the mile, but I'm not quite sure. There will be some interesting cars for this one- everything from Hennessey Vipers to NASCAR cup cars, to vintage Panteras. A race-prepped 351C wide open is a thing of beauty.

Of course, there will be a ton of Vettes out there, including modded C6 Z06's.

It's on Friday, in Arnold NE. About 4 hours from Denver. If you have the time, stay for the day, see the car show, and work the course during the race the next day.

More info at www.sorcrace.com

If anyone goes, post up photos/videos.

Results:

Twin turbo viper: 215.1 MPH in a standing mile. Good enough for SECOND place.

(As I slit my wrists, because it's truly a sign that the apocylapse is upon us)...............

Mitsubishi EVO: 31 psi of boost, producing a standing mile finish line speed of.........................................215.9 MPH.

Holy Mother of God.

That's some heavy acceleration, dude. In any position. IIRC, it took us around 3-5 miles to get those numbers at SSCC in 2002. We were geared a lot taller, for engine longevity, but holy crap, batman.

The tires are still cold in a mile- not something you want at those speeds. Ever seen the "electric blankets" they use on F1 cars? That's cause at speed, it's like an ice rink. Any little twitch, and you're done. You don't walk away from a crash at those speeds, you ascend to heaven..........

Almost literally. The front fenders of those things are very thin aluminum.
