I know there are a million camping spots but it's difficult to locate on the internet. Can someone please recommend a spot with close fishing thats in a relatively kid friendly area within about 1.5 hours from North Denver? I am in Erie.
Most car camping areas are booking up quick.

Red Feathers and the Poudre Canyon areas have a lot of opportunities.

We stayed at Kelly Dahl campground a few years ago and they had a playground with a slide and tire swing for the kiddos. Pretty nice but not sure about fishing, maybe some some fingers of the Saint Vrain or Barker Reservoir in Nederland if you bait chuck? Good luck

We were up at Red Feather's this last weekend with the kid. Camped south of Bellair lake on one of the FS roads. Bellaire lake camping area is pretty full up as far as spots go, but a lot of those forest svc. roads should be ok for a 2wd. Very pretty and not too crowded.

Steamboat has campground that is very kid friendly, 160 miles from my home in Thornton going from Silverton to HWY 40. You could take 40 directly from Erie..
you can camp in a tent or they have little cabins right on the Yampa..

I highly recommend Mary's Lake just outside of Estes Park. Nice camping areas (for tents and trailer/RVs). Also, they have really nice restrooms with hot showers!!
I would NOT recommend going there the weekend after Labor Day (Scottish Festival) and you might see my sorry butt completely drunk and singing the Rodeo Song. Not a good sight for your kids. :D

my favorite is the gross, its by boulder, you dont have to pay to camp, there are spots all along water, and you need a 4x4 to get down to the water, and not a lot of people go out there... great place to spend a weekend..lots of fun...you go into boulder with 36 then turn on left on canyon the left on magnolia then take that road for a while until it hits dirt then you turn down 86 there will be a parking lot on the right a ways down and the beginning to the trail...good times, but no swimming which stinks, but great fishing esp. by the dam...
