I just moved into a new house, and the seller left me a few things that he wasn't going to need at his new place. One of which is a Tivo/Direct TV satellite box with remote control. I don't have Direct TV and don't really want it, so I don't know much about them.

It has what looks like a card slot on the front, but it is empty. Is this thing worth anything to anybody? Or is it just trash? This isn't a for sale post, but I'm just wondering what I should do with it.

I can post up later when I get home with model # and details. Thanks-

My ComCrap box has the same slot. I know on some of the older stuff that's where something similar to a cell phone's SIM card was kept, but not sure if they do that anymore.

Our current DirecTV/Tivo still has the slot. Austin, unless it's an HD receiver w/HD Tivo, it's essentially worthless even though you can get a new card for it.

You need a card to activate/use the unit, just like a cell SIM card. The unit is worthless without it.

Can someone get a card to activate it from Direct TV? Like, say, for cheaper than it would cost to buy the entire unit?

Hell, I'll give it away even, I just hate to toss it out in the trash.

Can you get a new card? Yes. If it costs anything it's more than the basic unit since I'm pretty sure DirecTV gives you a 100% rebate on non-HD equipment making a brandy new unit free.

It looks like they are going for $40+ on CL. Sell it and take the wife out to a fancy dinner at Chili's :D

yea, it's like 25 bucks to get a card from DirectTV (I do installs for them) the new HD units as far as I know on discounts are like 200 with a 100 rebate and the same with the HD-DVR (tivo) 300 with a 100 rebate. I don't normally deal with the pricing and stuff like that, but you pick it up while doing installs...

Those Tivo boxes are still popular suprisingly, people still want them because they are about the only ones out there now that you can still mod (bigger hard drives, network them to you LAN and such things like that) I wouldn't be suprised someone takes that off of you sooner rather than later

Thanks Justin, I'll see if I can get a Happy Meal outta it :)

I'll take it off your hands if you want. I have a card from my DTV receiver that died so I'm all set.

I would consider box worthless and just take the Hard Drive out, buy a portable HD case and now you got a $20 portable HD. How big is drive?
