I spoke to the Forest Service Recreation Specialist for the South Park Ranger District yesterday about our trail maintenance outcome. He stated that last winter there were 3 vehicles that slid off the first portion of the trail before the mine with folks that were going ice climbing.
As a result, the NFS is going to place a gate across the road just past the bridge over the diversion spillway. This gate will be closed for winter purposes to prevent the problem cars from sliding over the edge.
I asked if the Fugowie's could go up in the Spring and advise the FS on opening the gate if conditions allow, and got the ok.
The good thing I can say is that this should help keep the trial open for the long run. When there is snow, there are some wheelers that will go around and cause negative impact. We will open the trail as early as possible and perhaps help keep folks on the trail by getting through the drifts that some go around.
