I spoke to the Forest Service Recreation Specialist for the South Park Ranger District yesterday about our trail maintenance outcome. He stated that last winter there were 3 vehicles that slid off the first portion of the trail before the mine with folks that were going ice climbing.

As a result, the NFS is going to place a gate across the road just past the bridge over the diversion spillway. This gate will be closed for winter purposes to prevent the problem cars from sliding over the edge.

I asked if the Fugowie's could go up in the Spring and advise the FS on opening the gate if conditions allow, and got the ok.

The good thing I can say is that this should help keep the trial open for the long run. When there is snow, there are some wheelers that will go around and cause negative impact. We will open the trail as early as possible and perhaps help keep folks on the trail by getting through the drifts that some go around.

Does this mean Wheeler is closed now? If not, when are they going to close the gate? We are planning to run Wheeler this weekend...

The gate isn't installed yet, but will be soon. The Forest Service will close the gate when the ice builds up on the road just below the mine. I wouldn't expect the gate to close before Nov 1 at the earliest unless a major snow hits sooner.

The mud bog has a solid bottom, so go slow and stay in the middle.

Thanks!

Thanks for the info. We will probably run it tomorrow or Saturday. Hope to see you on the trails sometime!

Aaron,
Wish I could join you again but this weekend is too busy. Have fun at Wheeler Lake.

Aaron,
When you run Wheeler Lake this weekend. Make sure you rub my rock with your rocker gards. Since I won't be there to rub it myself.

Bill,
We all need to get together again for another trail before winter really hits.

I should have a easier time, I got the locker installed last night. Too bad I can't wheel this weekend.

Thanks to the Fugwie Four Wheelers for maintenance of the trail. Next time if you need more help you can count me in.

If a gate will keep people out that shouldn't be there then that is a good idea.

This is one trail I hope will stay open for a long time.
I have only ran it ones, but would like to do it again.

Bill and Willie-

We ended up not running Wheeler today because of the inclement weather.... smilies/frown.gif We did run Spring Creek yesterday (Friday) and had lots of fun. Nobody could go with us, so I just took my Cherokee and had no problems, even up the rock garden. We definitely need to get together and run another trail before the summer is completely gone!

Talk to ya all later....
